Boston: James Walden 1821. 108pp. with folding woodcut frontispiece and full-page woodcut illustration. 12mo. Contemporary half leather and marbled boards. Extremities worn some loss to paper on front board. Contemporary ownership inscription on front fly leaf and titlepage light staining on endpapers. Very good. An unusual American edition with the scarce folding frontispiece woodcut depicting Eliza Bradley's delivery into captivity. Originally appearing in 1820 Bradley's story is one of fantastic survival. She accompanied her husband on a voyage to Teneriffe but their ship was wrecked off the coast of Barbary during a violent storm. They survived but soon after their landing they were captured by a band of Arabs and made slaves. Her husband managed to escape and was able to return to purchase her freedom. Bradley's narrative proved exceedingly popular going through numerous editions in New England and New York. Ex-library with bookplates some foxed and stained cut to one leaf not affecting text. A good copy but lacking the frontispiece. . Imprints 574. This was issued both in the US and UK. Robinson in her Wayward Women notes that the earliest issue of this that she could find was Boston 1821. Bradley and her husband left England in the Spring of 1818. Bradley was the only woman aboard the Sally when it was blown onto the Barbary coast of north-west Africa. She and the survivors were captured by a passing caravan and while the men were sent off to be sold to the British counsel in Mogadir Eliza was held in the village were she spent the next five months until she was reunited with her husband and returned to England. A popular work which went through many editions in New England and New York during the 1820's. Mrs. Bradley was separated from her husband after the ship Sally was wrecked off the coast of Morocco and held captive for six months by the Arabs before ransomed by the British consul.
