Various paginations.<br /> <br /> Beautiful set of Will Bradley's Chap-Book Series plus four supplements. All in fine condition protected by mylar wrappers and stored in custom clam-shell box. September 1904 is un-cut. Very light toning. Fine Condition.<br /> <br /> Will Bradley 1868-1962 the "Dean of American Designers" developed a unique American Art Nouveau style recognizable immediately. He worked variously as an illustrator artist printer and film director and while he struggled financially early in his career he was one of the highest-paid American artists of the early 20th century.<br /> <br /> In 1903 Robert Nelson president of American Type Founders hired Will Bradley to create a promotional campaign for ATF. Bradley was given full creative reign to print and design whatever he wanted without many financial constraints. In September 1904 Bradley's first "American Chap-Book" was published. With the ability to do what he wanted Bradley employed wide numbers of decorative and type designs over the next twelve issues. Bradley also planned a number of supplements to accompany his little books. Each book had a theme such as "Use of Borders and Ornaments" "The Value of Little Things" "A Detail of Advertising Display" or the July 1905 issue titled "Bookets" which contained two tipped in miniature booklets. <br /> <br /> "Two 'volumes' of The American Chap-Book were published between the years of 1904 and 1905 with six editions each. Volume 1 contains "Eighteenth Century Chap-Books and Broadsides" September 1904; "Directness and Simplicity" October 1904; "The Use of Borders and Ornaments" November 1904; "Appropriateness" December 1904; "The Abuse of Custom" January 1905; and "The Value of Little Things" February 1905. Volume 2 contains "Cover Designs" March 1905; "Business Cards" April 1905; "Use of Brass Rule" May 1905; "Advertising Display" June 1905; "Booklets" July 1905; and "Title Pages" August 1905." From Will H. Bradley: His Work A Bibliographical Guide compiled by Anthony Bambace.<br /> <br /> Author Robert Koch wrote a wonderful illustrated monograph on Bradley titled "Will H. Bradley American Artist in Print". Several pages are devoted to Bradley's "American Chap-Books."<br /> <br /> From cover and endpaper design to the use of typography and color these little booklets including the four supplements are a wonder to behold and rarely found on the market is such pristine condition. Bambace pp. 169-175; 180 wrong dimensions; Koch pp. 119-131.An exceptional compendium of advertisements in fact small posters produced by the Ault & Wiborg Ink company. "Having exhausted our entire stock of unbound Posters through responding to demands for same we concluded some time ago to reissue in pamphlet form practically all heretofore shown by us and this Album is the result." -- page 1 The book contains 57 of 60 letterpress plates by various designers reprinting advertisements the company produced from the years 1895-1902. Among the exceptionally designed and colorful images are twenty designed by Will Bradley and one by Louis Rhead. There are also excellent works by Crittenden Carolyn Huntington Binner and many others. A sought after volume of plates. There is an additional watermarked advertisement titled "The Song" laid in that does not appear to be originally part of the volume.Wear soiling and staining to cloth with rubbing to extremities; front free endpaper with creasing at corner and some pencil marks plates 15 23 and 35 are lacking plate 11 with closed tear at bottom slightly affecting the illustration plate 32 with a 4x3" section cut away at top corner a few other plates with minor closed tears at edges not affecting the artwork all plate colors bright some with light toning a few with fingerprints in margins. ‎One large page 9 x 5 1/2 inches. Superb and early autograph letter signed by famed American artist and illustrator Will Bradley to Frances F. Browne a noted editor and literary critic with whom Bradley would work closely with over the years. Written on Bradley’s stationery printed at top left: “Will H. Bradley/Artist/1111 Monadnock Building/Chicago.†The letter is almost entirely taken up with design and description of his art: “Aug 25 -92. Mr. Frances F. Browne Dear Sir: I will explain the design & send you by today’s mail as the pencil sketch is not very clear. Below the dial are laurel branches which support the dial and also two torches. The sun is indicated its rays forming a background to add a little strength to center of design. The laurel branches are woven to form four leaf shaped designs in the center of which are emblems the ribbon work continues below the title and on this I have indicated the sub-title as it will help to make the design compact. The rough sketch looks a little crowded but the finished drawing will not appear so as the title will be strong. “ Very good with slight browning to bottom crease marks barely visible to face of letter. ‎Offered here are three ALS by Will Bradley in 1894 to “The Dial†a Chicago publisher and specifically to F. G. Browne who was in charge of business interest for the company concerning proposed sketches he was working on for Harry B. Smith’s book “Lyrics and Sonnets†which was published by The Dial Press later that year. Three ALS on ruled paper: 1 “Mr. F. G. Browne: ‘The Dial’ Chicago. Dear Sir: Please consign to the waste basket the sketches I sent Saturday. have had better luck since sending them. and will call with finished drawing at about 10 to-morrow A.M. Yours resp. Will H. Bradley Geneva Apr. 9-94.†2 “Mr. F. G. Browne Chicago. Dear Sir: Your postal arrived this morning. will send or ring sketches so you will get thru to-morrow A.M. Hope circumstances will permit of Mr. Smith waiting to see them. Yours resp. Will H. Bradley. Geneva Apr. 6.94.†3 “Dear Mr. Browne Enclosed are two rough sketches. This work has been a blank with me as I have spoiled everything I have undertaken. I let your work go until to-day hoping my luck would change but it hasn’t will come in and see you next week. Yours resp. Will H. Bradley. Geneva apr 7 9r.†A fascinatingly self-effacing series of letters by Bradley written very early in his luminous and successful career as book designer and illustrator. In fact Bradley had only provided art for four books prior to Smith’s “Lyrics and Sonnets†and the stress of not coming up with adequate designs was obviously causing stress. The letters are near fine written on interestingly cheap ruled paper. Most scarce grouping two of the proposed sketches are in our possession listed in other cataloged entries. unknown‎

‎Two pages on folded light green paper April 28 1901. Autograph Letter Signed to noted American architect author and printing designer Frank Chouteau Brown during the very period in which Will Bradley was withdrawing from work for a season owing to personal stresses and impending nervous breakdown and the letter deals with Bradley’s inability to take on work. Bradley writes to Chouteau “10 Kirkland Road Cambridge 1901. My Dear Sir: I have yours of the 22nd. I am very sorry that even with the extended time I can’t possibly give you any material for your book. I found it necessary the first of this year to refrain from taking on any new work even of the slightest nature as I am now spending longer hours at my drawings than I should and even then I can’t get through with the work I have in hand.†He goes on to explain how he’d like to take up a rest in the latter part of August and in order to accomplish this he must “keep everlastingly at it.†He closes with a pleasant invitation to call but he trusts “you won’t urge me any further to give you a drawing. Yours Truly Will Bradley.†And below that “To Frank C. Brown Esq. Boston.†Fine folded twice. ‎<p>Unbound colored map straight-line border 15"x 11". Pennsylvania on reverse double page 15" x 24". Slight toning and aging; a few chips and tears on side or joining margin overall bright and clear and in very good shape. Maps are wrapped with acid free board or in rigid sleeves. While the map was published by William Bradley this is essentially a Mitchell map. As the Mitchell family retired from the business between 1880 and 1887 their maps were published by Bradley in Philadelphia. This map is an attractive map of New Jersey.
