‎London, 1774. 8vo. Very nice, contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spine. Gilt line to edges of boards. Marbled edges. A bit of minor scattered brownspotting and some smaller dampstaining towards end. All in all a very nice copy. (4), III, (1), 151 pp. Beautiful woodcut vignettes.‎

‎Possibly first edition. One of three editions printed in 1774, none of which has been established as the true first. All three editions are printed in London but differ in number of pages, the other two having 96 and 84 respectively, ours having 151. This very interesting work of the French Enlightenment is probably not written by Helvetius, but by whom is not known. It does stay within the controversial lines of the great Enlightenment philosophers, though, probably being the reson why the author has never been identified. It has a lot in common with d'Holbach's monumental ""Système de la Nature"" from 1770, which constitutes the main work of materialism and one of the most important works of natural philosophy. Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt in compartments, gilt fillets on sides, gilt lettering to spine, a very good copy. Rare clandestine edition, made 'à la Hollandaise' by Michelins in Provins, of this epoch-making work which brought together the 'philosophes' in a common front against their ennemies (see: Belin, Commerce des livres prohibés, p. 102). Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771) obtained the lucrative post of fermier-général in which he soon grew rich. He became known, however, for the philantropic and enlightened uses he made of his great wealth, particularly as a patron of the philosophers and men of letters. He resigned in 1751 from tax-farming, married and retired to his country estate, thenceforth devoting himself primarily to philosophical and literary persuits. The publication in 1758 of his principal work, De l'Esprit, proved to be one of the ideological causes célébres of the eighteenth century. Appearing at a moment of political reaction, De l'Esprit was noisily condemned by the authorities, both ecclesiastical and ministerial, for its dangerously heretical and subversive opinions. No book during the eighteenth century, except perhaps Rousseau's Emile, evoked such an outcry from the religious and civil authorities or such universal public interest. Condemned as atheistic, materialistic, sacrilegious, immoral and subversive, it enjoyed a remarkable succès de scandale. It lost its privilège within a fortnight of its publication. It was attacked in Church periodicals and in polemical pamphlets, in the literary salons and in popular songs, from bishops' pulpits and from the stage of the Théâtre français. When the work appeared it was censured by the Sorbonne, the pope and the Parlement of Paris and in 1759 it was burnt by the public executioner. Even Diderot found himself unable to subscribe to it. But in spite of Diderot's systematic refutation of the work and in spite of the fact that Helvétius never collaborated in the Encyclopédie the authorities held the sensationalistic philosophy expounded by the encyclopédistes responsible for Helvétius dangerous principles. The appearance of De l'Esprit was thus an important factor in the second suppression of the Encyclopédie. The thought of Helvétius sprang mainly from the predominant current of sensualism in the Enlightenment, which he fashioned with marked originality into what may be described as a thoroughgoing doctrine of 'environmental behaviorism'. - In this copy the 'Tables sommaires' are bound before the 'discourses.'‎

‎Extremely rare first edition, first issue, with manuscript dedication-inscription from the author, of this monumental work of the French Enlightenment. This magnum opus of modern thought is considered the founding work of modern Utilitarianism, as it is here that Helvétius articulates the greatest happiness principle (""the greatest happiness for the greatest number"") for the first time and becomes the first to define social welfare upon this utilitarian maxim, directly influencing Bentham and Mill.The materialistic philosophy of Helvétius' ""De l'Esprit"" also directly influenced Karl Marx, who had studied the work while in Paris and called the ideas presented in it ""the social basis of communism"".""De l'Esprit"" arguably constitutes the greatest ""succès de scandale"" of Western thought and one of the most influential works of Western philosophy.This magnificent copy is stunning in all ways. It contains all the extremely rare condemned and repressed leaves of the first issue (bound in the back), it is printed on large paper, contemporarily bound (presumably under instruction by Helvétius himself) in a stunning full calf gift binding and with two manuscript ex-dono- (presentation-) inscriptions by Helvétius himself. One of them, on the verso of the title-page, is crossed out, but is still legible (reading ""donum auctoris 17 avril 1760 Cl. Helvetius""), the second, on the front free end-paper reads ""ex dono auctoris 1761"" - thus indicating that Helvétius, who had the copy in his possession, to give away when he felt it appropriate, had first intended to give it away - perhaps late in the year - in 1760, and then ended up giving it away in 1761. The work lost its privilege almost immediately, and even though Hélvetius wrote three retractions, it was still condemned and publicly burnt. In spite of this, Helvétius still kept a few copies of the very first issue, with all the original leaves. According to Smith, 15 copies existed, and as Jacques Guérin also notes, these copies were all intended for his close friends and family (we know for instance that Rousseau received one of the copies). These copies, of which the present is one, are thus of the utmost scarcity. Only one other has been on the market within the last 25 years, namely that of Jacques Guérin, which, however, did not have a dedication-inscription from Helvétius.As Tchermerzine describes, the extremely rare copies of the first issue, which are either without the newly formulated leaves or with the original leaves preserved (our copy has them all!) are between 10 and 60 times as valuable as the later issues, depending on condition - these between 4 and 15 copies are the only ones to contain the 80 revolutionary pages that caused the work to be condemned and burnt and sent Helvétius into exile. Tchermerzine does not, however, account for copies with a presentation-inscription like the present. The work caused an immense uproar, when it appeared. It was considered so heretical, atheistic, and immoral that it lost its privilege within a fortnight" it was heavily condemned by the Church and the State and was burnt by the Hangman, the plan being to destroy all copies of it. Few books in the entire history of printing have been met with such opposition - it was condemned by both the son of Louis XV and the Sorbonne, and the priests succeeded in convincing the court that the doctrines were so dangerous that even though Helvetius wrote three retractions, the book was still publically burned" and when the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert was suppressed for the second time, this had much to do with Helvétius' De l'Esprit and the scandal it had caused.This scandalous work, however, gained so much attention that it was almost immediately translated into all European languages, contributing to the immense influence it came to have on all European thought. ‎Un monument des Lumières et de la philosophie matérialiste et un des grands scandales éditoriaux du XVIIIe siècle. Édition originale en second tirage (décrite [E.1B] par David Smith), dans lequel le premier mot de la page 5 est "de" (alors qu'il est "dans" dans le premier tirage [E.1A] devenu rarissime et "mon" dans la deuxième édition [E.2] parue la même année et plus commune) et portant les erreurs de titre "Dicours II" au lieu de "Discours II" en tête de la page 67 et "Discours II" au lieu de "Discours III" en tête de la page 295. Ouvrage imprimé par Moreau, imprimeur de la Reine et de monseigneur le Dauphin. À la page 644, comme au premier tirage [E.1A], l'Approbation est signée par Tercier à la date du 27 mars 1758 et le Privilège du roi est signé par Le Bègue au 12 mai 1758, avec un enregistrement par Le Mercier le 19 mai 1758. "Première édition de cet ouvrage célèbre, censuré par la Sorbonne comme contenant tous les poisons épars dans les différents livres modernes, c'est-à-dire contemporains. [...] L'ouvrage dédié à la famille royale, fut repoussé par cette dernière, et le 10 août, peu de jours après celui de la parution, le privilège, donné le 12 mai, fut révoqué. Malgré la Lettre au révérend père..... [Berthier ou Pleix], qui constitue une apologie et une rétractation, suivie d'une autre rétractation plus explicite, le livre fut blâmé par le clergé. Helvétius en remit alors une troisième à Joly de Fleury, avocat général, le 22 janvier 1759 ; le 31 parut la lettre du pape, le 9 avril, la censure de la Faculté de Théologie. Dès le 23 janvier Fleury avait prononcé ses réquisitions, tout en ménageant l'auteur lui-même, et le Parlement, le 6 février 1759 rendit son jugement ; le livre fut brûlé le 10. Du 10 Août 1758. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1758. "Le Roi s'étant fait rendre compte d'un livre intitulé, de l'Esprit, imprimé en vertu de lettres de privilège obtenues le 12 mai dernier, Sa Majesté auroit reconnu que la licence qui règne dans tout cet ouvrage, & les maximes dangereuses qui y sont répandues, ne permettent pas de laisser subsister ledit privilège, & de tolérer le débit & la distribution dudit livre ; [...] Ordonne que ledit Livre sera & demeurera supprimé, & en conséquence, que tous les exemplaires qui en ont été répandus dans le public, seront incessamment rapportés au greffe [...] pour y être supprimés." (Extraits). - 2 pages in-8 imprimées d'une lettre de repentir et de rétractation de Helvétius face à la mauvaise réception du livre : "il est bien cruel & bien douloureux pour moi d'avoir allarmé, scandalisé, révolté même des personnes pieuses, éclairées, respectables, dont j'ambitionnois les suffrages [...] ; mais c'est ma faute, je la reconnois dans toute son étendue, & je l'expie par le plus amer repentir. Je souhaite très vivement & très sincèrement que tous ceux qui auront eu le malheur de lire cet ouvrage, me fassent la grâce de ne me point juger d'après la fatale impression qui leur en reste." (Extrait). Quelques rousseurs, une mouillure dans l'angle supérieur sur les 65 premières pages, des taches (p. 133,268, 288 à 291), une coupe abimée avec manque de cuir, rares petits défauts de marge.‎

‎De l'esprit est un essai de Claude-Adrien Helvétius paru, sans nom d'auteur, le 27 juillet 1758. Les thèses matérialistes qu'il contient sont rapidement dénoncées par les milieux conservateurs. An excellent early french language edition on beautiful uncut excellent paper with extra wide margins. Helvétius' philosophical studies ended in the production of his famous book De l'esprit On Mind. It was first published in 1758 and was intended to be the rival of Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws with Helvétius arguing strongly against Montesquieu's theory that climate influenced the character of nations. The work attracted immediate attention and aroused the most formidable opposition especially from the dauphin Louis son of King Louis XV. The Advocate General Joly de Fleury condemned it in the Parlement of Paris in January 1759. The Sorbonne condemned the book while the priests persuaded the court that it was full of the most dangerous doctrines. The book was declared to be heretical – so atheistic that it was condemned by Church and State and was burned. Helvétius terrified at the storm he had raised wrote three separate and humiliating retractions. In spite of his protestations of orthodoxy the book was publicly burned by the Paris hangman. It had far-reaching negative effects on the rest of the philosophes in particular Denis Diderot and the great work he was doing on the Encyclopedie. The religious authorities particularly the Jesuits and the new pope began to fear the spread of atheism and wanted to clamp down on the 'modern thought' hard and quickly. De l'esprit became almost a scapegoat for this. This great publicity resulted in the book being translated into almost all the languages of Europe. Voltaire said that it lacked originality. Rousseau declared that the very benevolence of the author gave the lie to his principles. Grimm thought that all the ideas in the book were borrowed from Diderot. Madame du Deffand felt that Helvétius had raised such a storm by saying openly what everyone thought in secret.
