La religione della Cina. La tradizione vivente
br.

The Attentive Heart: Conversations with Trees.
New York NY Ballantine Books: Fawcett Columbine 1993. Hardcover First Ed; First Printing indicated. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR at title page. First Ed; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Near Fine DJ: Both book and DJ show only minute indications of use. Book shows former owner's gift inscription at front free endpaper; else a bit of very faint spotting at top edge; binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows a small stray mark at lower front face and some barely discernible soiling; price unclipped; mylar-protected. Overall very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 258pp. Illustrated by Davis Te Selle. Hardback with DJ. Readers who feel a kinship with trees will be captivated by these "conversations." Now a professor of environmental studies at the University of Vermont Kaza bases most of these meditative essays on experiences she had in California. With a Buddhist reverence for living things she follows the Zen practice of shikantaza --just sitting--to find serenity and inspiration among trees. She observes the change of seasons with a stately gingko re-visits a commune to renew her acquaintance with a tan oak and madrone dreams as she leans against a massive blue oak. On Arbor Day Kaza joins a group planting redwood seedlings; she makes a pilgrimage to Methuselah Grove to see bristlecone pines and to Yosemite for whitebark pines. Other encounters include red firs alders and sycamores. This is a beautifully written imaginative appreciation of trees. This book records a series of the author's intensely personal sometimes spiritual relationships with individual trees. Her approach is based on her experience as a practitioner of Zen meditation techniques. Kaza's training as a naturalist however gives her essays a more realistic bent; she recognizes the many uses of wood as a raw material--for paper furniture fuel lumber etc.--and does not dismiss the human uses of trees as an evil. Her descriptions of the trees and the life around them and in them are accurate and lyrical although the writing is almost too poetic and intense in spots. This is not a book to be read straight through; it should be dipped into at reflective moments like a book of poems. Notes in the back constitute a bibliography of sorts. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Ballantine Books: Fawcett Columbine, hardcover

Uniting Heaven and Earth: A Jungian and Taoist Exploration of the Masculine and Feminine in Human Consciousness.
Los Angeles CA Jeremy P. Tarcher 1989. Paperback Reprint Edition; First Printing Thus. Very Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of toning to the white background field of the panels and backstrip; the pages have tanned somewhat due to aging. The binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 244pp. Foreward by Robert Bly. Reprint Edition; First Printing Thus. Originally published in 1979 as "The Spirit of the Valley." Trade Paperback. Colegrave joins many ancient mystics and modern scientists who believe that there are patterns in the evolution of consciousness just as there are patterns in biological evolution. The primary pattern she detects is the rise of masculine values such as reason domination and hierarchy. These values have diminished the feminine realms of relatedness intuition imagination and emotion. This imbalance robs our culture and our individual lives. Author taught Chinese history. Jeremy P. The DJ shows only the mildest rubbing; else flawless; the price unclipped. Overall very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 154pp. Introduction Notes and Commentary by the Translator. Wheat-toned buckram over boards with sewn-in silk place marker. A lovely production. Hardback with DJ. This ancient Chinese manual of spiritual alchemy was brought to the West in translation by missionary and theologian Richard Wilhelm. According to Carl Jung he had reached an impasse in his work on the psychology of the unconscious when Wilhelm introduced him to "The Secret of the Golden Flower". This proved to be a monumental event in Jung's career and he credits this text with having provided him with a key to the resolution of this impasse. In view of the influence of Jung's work in the subsequent development of psychology religious studies and New Age culture in general the importance of this work in the introduction of traditional oriental psychology into modern Western mental culture has been great indeed. Written over 200 years ago as a revival of an ancient teaching the work is a popular guide to Buddhist and Taoist techniques for clarifying the mind and awakening its latent potential. Théophane
Matgioi
br.
