Au baron Joseph-Dominique Louis (1755-1837), qui fut ministre des finances : « Monsieur le Baron, Le 22 de janvier [17]96, vous m'écriviez de Hambourg à Londres : "aimez, aimez un peu celui qui a pour vous tant d'admiration et d'attachement". Quel était monsieur le Baron l'objet de votre admiration pour moi, dans un jour agréable que vous passiez à ma campagne où je donnais un honorable asile au célèbre et malheureux Rivarol, où le français dans l'indigence, quel qu'il fut, ne réclama jamais en vain mes bons offices. Cette admiration était sans doute l'effet des principes des finances que j'y professais en opposition à ceux des économistes ; principes que j'assumais de voir me conduire un jour à la solution d'un grand problème dans l'encyclopédie française. Ce ne pouvait être mon opération de change, toute bien combiné qu'elle fut, toute extraordinaire qu'elle parut ; où vous regardiez l'agiotage comme la lèpre des corps politiques et cette opération n'était que de l'agiotage uni à l'usure quoique je n'y eusse attaché aucune illusion, aucune perfidie. Comment se fait-il donc, Monsieur le Baron, avec l'amour que je vous ai connu pour la science des finances, avec les grandes connaissances que vous avez acquises depuis, enfin avec les talents que vous possédez, vous ayez aujourd'hui la certitude que j'ai résolu ce problème et que vous soyez encore à me témoigner la plus légère satisfaction. Croyez, monsieur l Baron, que la vérité de cette découverte et son besoin absolu d'en jouir sont trop bien senties aujourd'hui pour que le juste même en arrête le cours. Vous aurez aussi aperçu combien cette découverte est également précieuse, sous le rapport d'un signe monétaire. Pourrait-il en effet en existe de plus parfait ? Le besoin d'acquérir la mesure propre à percevoir cet impôt ne la rendrait-il pas égale à l'argent qui servirait à l'acquérir et ce papier ne libérerait-il pas lui-même sa valeur qu'il exprimerait ? Vous ne croyez pas sans doute qu'on aura créé une propriété de [mots illisibles] sans avoir besoin de créer un signe supplémentaire pour faire le service [mot illisible] sans cesser l'agiotage uni à l'usure. Par ma lettre du 13, je vous demandais un secours, parce que je craignais que mon impôt sur les paiements ne put être admis dans cette sessions et que vous m'aviez fait dire que vous seriez charmé de faire quelque chose qui put m'être agréable. Je dois donc vous avouer, Monsieur le Baron, qu'ayant su que l'on donnait dans le Ministère des sinécures à ceux qui rendaient ou avaient rendu un service, qu'ayant sacrifié ma fortune aux vains principes et continuant d'y sacrifier mon talent pour ne pas cesser d'être utile, j'avais [mot illisible] y avoir des droits et pouvoir, en conséquence, vous demandez ce genre de secours sans perdre de mon caractère pour vivoter(?) In-8 (209 x 134 mm), demi-maroquin rouge à grain long, dos orné de filets à froid, auteur et titre dorés (rel. moderne signée Laurenchet), (4), 194 p., 4 p. de catalogue éditeur, 2 grandes cartes dépliantes. Rare édition originale distribuée hors commerce "aux amis" et sympathisants fouriéristes, comme précisé par l'auteur dans son avertissement. Véritable programme matériel pour la colonisation phalanstérienne du Texas, l'ouvrage est illustré de deux grandes cartes repliées hors texte avec contours coloriés imprimées par Lemercier: une des États-Unis gravée par les Frères Avril, l'autre du Texas par F. Delamare, d'après J.-H. Colton. "Considérant développe son projet. Il relate son voyage et fait des descriptions du Texas qu’il présente comme la Terre promise et le lieu idéal pour l’expérimentation sociale (…). Il propose la fondation d’une agence de colonisation, suivie de la création d’un grand champ d’asile ouvert à toutes sortes d’expériences sociales, dont celles fouriéristes (…). Dès sa parution, "Au Texas" rencontra un succès immédiat qui dépassa toutes les prévisions (…). C’est poussé par ce succès et par l’impatience manifestée par les aspirants colons que François Cantagrel partit pour le Nouveau Monde le 3 oct. 1854 avec comme mission de rechercher l’emplacement de la future colonie" ("Les premiers socialismes", Expo. virtuelle, 2008, U. de Poitiers, en ligne). Né à Salins (Jura), polytechnicien, Victor Considérant (1808-1893) renonça à la carrière militaire pour se consacrer à la diffusion des idéaux fouriéristes, jusqu'à reprendre la tête du mouvement à la mort de Fourier en 1837. La "Colonie de Réunion" fondée près de Dallas (Texas) tourna rapidement au fiasco. Après plusieurs années à San Antonio, Considérant rentra à Paris en 1869 à la faveur d'une amnistie, adhéra un temps à la Première Internationale, puis se retira de la vie politique. Rousseurs et piqûres éparses. Les cartes sont parfaitement conservées. Bon exemplaire, bien relié.
