ACTA ERUDITORUM MDCXCIV.
Containing a full year's issues from January to December 1694, Latin text with some titles in French, German or Italian, full list of authors at the end entered under specialisms such as mathematics or medicine, plus index of topics treated. 1694, small 4to, 210 x 165 mm, 8¼ x 6¼ inches, 11 plates numbered I-XI in the first 10 months, 2 for July, 8 folding, pages (2), 346, 345-392, 313-518, pagination somewhat erratic but collated and guaranteed complete, the jump from 392 to 313 is mentioned in the index, bound in full contemporary vellum, remains of hand lettered title to spine. Vellum slightly marked and slightly spotted, lower corners just slightly bumped, some early ink inscriptions on the endpapers with the signature of William Spence plus a mention of having left Glasgow in 1795, which points to the Scottish mathematician of that name (1777-1815), further signatures of Spence on second endpaper which also bears his library stamp (W S No: 8), and on reverse of title page with some show through, on rear endpaper Spence has written "Isaac Newton Eques Auratus", front endpapers slightly spotted, a couple of ink spots on title page, age-browning to pages, heavy in some places but all still easily legible, ink spot to 2 inner margins. Binding tight and firm. A good complete copy. Acta Eruditorum was the first scientific journal of the German lands, founded in 1682 in Leipzig by Otto Mencke and patterned after the French Journal des savants and Italian Giornale de' letterati. It contained excerpts from new writings, reviews, small essays and notes. Most of them were devoted to the natural sciences and mathematics and many eminent scientists published there including Newton and Bernoulli. There were also contributions by physicians, architects, geographers, historians, humanists, philosophers and theologians. In this volume there are articles on or by Johann Bernoulli, Jacob Bernoulli, Robert Boyle, Giovanni Ciampini, Augustin Charles Daviler, Christiaan Huygens, Leibniz, Ozanam, Francis Bacon, and many others. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. illustrated by Patric O'Keeffe - First Edition Leipzig, apud Joh. Grossii haeredes & Joh. Thom. Fritschium, typis Christiani Goezii, 1694.

(BACON, FRANCIS) (FREUD, LUCIAN) (GIACOMETTI, ALBERTO). ORDOVAS, PILAR
CROSSING THE CHANNEL: FRIENDSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS IN PARIS AND LONDON 1946-1965 - FRANCIS BACON, LUCIAN FREUD, AND ALBERTO GIACOMETTI
London, Gagosian Gallery., 2010, First Edition. (ISBN: 1-935263-14-5) Boards with Pastedown, 8vo, 90pp, profusely illustrated in color and duotone. Designed by Sinead Madden. With an exhibition checklist. This is the lavishly produced, exquisitely detailed hardbound catalogue published in conjunction with an extraordinary 2010 exhibition of works by Alberto Giacometti, Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon held at London's Gagosian Gallery. "Crossing the Channel: Friendships and Connections in London and Paris 1946-1965" examines the vibrant exchange of ideas and influences between Bacon, Freud and Giacometti in Paris and London during the postwar years. It spans the period from 1946 - the year that the international borders reopened - to 1965, when the Tate Gallery presented Giacometti's retrospective. During this time, the web of friendships and alliances between artists, patrons and collectors from London and Paris proved to be enormously influential". (BACON, FRANCIS). ADES, DAWN, ANDREW FORGE, ANDREW DURHAM & KRZYSZTOF CIESZKOWSKI. FOREWORD BY ALAN BOWNESS
FRANCIS BACON - AN EXTRAORDINARY ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED TO R.B. KITAJ
London, The Tate Gallery, Thames and Hudson, Ltd. & Global Asset Management., 1985, First Edition. Gilt Debossed Boards, 4to, 246pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. With a chronology, exhibition checklist and bibliography. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the elegant hardbound catalogue published in conjunction with the triumphant 1985 Francis Bacon exhibition organized by the Tate Gallery - one of the very few times the venerable British venue had presented a second retrospective to a British artist in their lifetime. Consisting of one hundred and twenty-five paintings executed between 1944 and 1984, it remains one of the most comprehensive surveys of Bacon's work, and the last great museum show before the influential artist's death in 1992. A most handsome copy of the special hors commerce edition bound in gilt-debossed orange linen (issued without dust jacket) for promotional use by the exhibition's corporate underwriter Global Asset Management Limited, this example was BOLDLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED "To R.B. Kitaj with very best wishes Francis Bacon" by the artist in black ink on the half-title page at the Tate opening. Ronald Brooks Kitaj was the American born, London based artist who shared a thirty year affiliation with Bacon at Marlborough Galley, and as colleagues in the informal, Kitaj-coined "School of London" clan of figurative artists. The association is made all the more poignant as Kitaj's own Tate retrospective a decade later proved to be one of the most critically vilified shows there of all time, irreparably affecting the artist's career. This volume was purchased by us directly from Mr. Kitaj in the month preceding his 2007 passing. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued.

(BACON, FRANCIS). DIXON, WILLIAM HEPWORTH.
Personal History of Lord Bacon from Unpublished Papers.
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1861. - 8vo, brown cloth (bumped & rubbed; spine faded; small dent to top edge of front cover) titled in gilt (somewhat faded) with frames & decorations stamped in blind on both covers. xix & 424 pp. (pencil name & white ink name on front endpaper with offsetting to pastedown; scattered foxing; small stains to fore-edge with tiny stains to front edges of a number of pages). Good. In his first chapter, the author writes that Spedding's new edition of Bacon's work "has drawn men's thoughts to the character of Bacon as painted by his foes; and the instinct, strong as virtue, to reject that spume of satire and falsehood, has sprung at the voice of Mr. Spedding into lusty life. To aid in some small part in this good work of obtaining from men of letters and science a reconsideration of the evidence on which true judgement will have to run, the new facts, the new letters, the new documentary illustrations comprised in this Review of the Personal History of Lord Bacon are given to the world."
