Hardcover. Fine. Extra illustrated with full-page frontispiece portrait of Raleigh. 8vo. Bound in full modern calf gilt lettering on spine. London Printed by Bonham Norton and John Bill 1618. First Edition. First Issue. With an early 17th-century inscription on the title page: From his very much esteemed friend Raleigh. It is thought that this might be an inscription by Raleighs cousin George. The inscription is slightly faded from having been lightly washed. This is the official apologia for Raleighs execution at the order of King James I. It was composed largely by Francis Bacon but also by the other commissioners who tried Raleigh and with additions by King James himself. It was published only a few months after the events it describes and as quickly as possible following Raleighs beheading. Starkeys article on the publication history of this book published in The Library in September of 1948 defined the first issue in conformity with this copy. His analysis is generally considered to supersede Pforzheimers earlier analysis as well as that of the first edition of STC both of which identified a different first issue. Since Starkeys article STC has revised its entry assigning first issue priority to the issue offered here. Bacon began his prosecution by asserting that it was not ever a Sovereigns duty to justify himself to his people but that Raleighs final speech had made it necessary to explain why his execution was deserved. Bacon then helpfully revised King James assent to Raleighs disastrous expedition to Guiana to conform to a magnanimous gesture. James had not it turned out believed in the existence as such of a City of Gold but had humored and indulged Raleigh because of his influence and popularity. As it is written in this work probably by Bacon: Sir W. Rawleigh had so inchanted the world with his confident asseveration of that which every man was willing to beleeve as his maiesties honour was in a manner ingaged not to deny unto his people the adventure and hope of so great Riches to bee sought and atchieved at the charge of Voluntaries. The work includes in full and for the first time in print the commission given to Raleigh for his Voyage and gives an account of how he betrayed this commission. Finally it gives a short account of Raleighs voyage and supposed misdeeds as well as a detailed account of Raleighs return and his purported attempts to escape. The volume is complete save the initial blank leaf signed A1 which is absent from nearly all copies. The upper margin is trimmed a little closely touching some of the page numbers o/w a fine clean copy. <br/> <br/> hardcover

Not only was he an eminent practitioner in the common law; not only did he leave his mark as lord chancellor upon the development of equity; he also studied both English law and law in general scientifically and critically. Very minor rubbing and edgewear to covers. Neat paper repairs to fore edge of engraved frontispiece portrait of Bacon. Creasing and some age-toning throughout especially to margins. Otherwise a very good copy of this desirable edition of one of Bacon's most important works. References: ESTC No. S106902; R.W. Gibson 141b. ~LLL~ Francis Bacon 1561-1626 was an English philosopher statesman scientist jurist orator essayist and author. He has remained extremely influential through his written works especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method. Bacon is considered one of the fathers of modern science. He proposed a great reformation of all processes of knowledge for the advancement of learning which he called the 'Instauratio Magna' or the 'Great Instauration' planning this in imitation of the Biblical work of the six days of divine creation. 'Of Proficience and Advancement of Learning Divine and Human' was first published in 1605 in the form of a letter to King James and was considered the first step in Bacon's Great Instauration scale of 'partitions of the sciences.' The work was expanded rewritten in Latin and published in 1623 as 'De Augmentis Scientiarum' which served as the basis for Oxford University's Dr. Gilbert Wats' translation here. Bacon's scientific classification system set forth in this work changed the way we look at the world serving as the basis for Denis Diderot's renowned eighteenth century encyclopedia of the sciences arts and crafts. .
