L´attuale momento storico e politico marcato dall´allargamento dell´Europa, dai problemi dell´integrazione europea, dai conflitti presenti nel Mediterraneo e nel medio Oriente, dall'ormai inevitabile confronto quotidiano tra civiltà, religioni, culture diverse sembrano rinforzare la legittimità di varie forme di comparatismo, spingendoci quanto meno a riflettere su quella che può essere ormai definita una complessa strategia di ricerca: la comparazione. Esiste attualmente una ragione profonda che ci spinge a riscoprire la strategia della comparazione nella ricerca; questa ragione rinvia a una realtà e a un´inquietudine che prende il nome di ‘mondializzazione´, un termine polisemantico dietro il quale si celano realtà culturali e politiche differenti e multiple, ma anche angosce e premonizioni di varia natura. In questo contesto il metodo comparativo può rivelarsi un modo di investigazione privilegiato per tutte quelle discipline che si interessano non solo allo studio ma anche alla trasformazione del mondo moderno. La comparazione è un´attività fondamentale della mente umana: seleziona rendendo possibile l'apprendimento del nuovo e creando schemi di rappresentazione sempre in movimento. La varietà dell´approccio metodologico comparativo è infinita, ma l'individuazione del tipo di comparazione adottata dalle varie discipline è determinante per comprendere la portata, oltre che i limiti, dei molteplici studi comparatistici. L'epistemologia della comparazione è dunque fondamentalmente dialettica: in virtù di essa la negazione del Sé in rapporto all´Altro è un percorso privilegiato che consente di pervenire alla conoscenza più perfetta di Sé, dell´Altro e della loro relazione, che viene creata nell´atto stesso della comparazione, promettendo possibili trasformazioni.
