Edition originale. Professeur au collège Duplessis à Paris et physicien, Pierre Nicolas Sigorgne (1719-1809) s'opposa courageusement aux derniers défenseurs du cartésianisme et défendit avec énergie le système de Newton. Il prit part aussi à de nombreux débats philosophiques, notamment contre Rousseau. Il était le correspondant de Condorcet à l'Académie royale des sciences. "Cette introduction aux mathématiques et à la physique de Newton a largement contribué à la diffusion de la théorie de l'unité universelle au sein de la communauté scientifique française. Un résumé latin de cet ouvrage devint la référence newtonienne en Europe" (Dict. of Scientific Bibliography). Sa carrière parisienne prometteuse prit cependant fin lorsqu'il fut arrêté en 1749 en tant qu'auteur présumé de vers satiriques contre Louis XV et Madame de Pompadour. Emprisonné quelque temps, il passa le reste de sa vie en exil à Mâcon, où il poursuivit ses travaux scientifiques et fonda l'Académie de cette ville. (Poggendorff, II, 927.). Mors fendu, coiffes usées. Très bon état intérieur, très frais.

Edition originale de cet essai dédié à Louis XIV et publié à l'imprimerie royale l'année même de la mort de Mazarin dont l'auteur avait été le secrétaire et le protégé depuis 1642. Philosophe proche de Descartes, Jean de Silhon (1596-1667) devint secrétaire de Richelieu, conseiller d'État, secrétaire de Mazarin et l'un des premiers fondateurs et membre de l'Académie française (1634). Il est l'un des principaux théoriciens et idéologues du pouvoir absolu de la période. "Le propos se divise en deux moments: la réfutation de la philosophie de Montaigne - figure emblématique du scepticisme aux yeux de Silhon - et de sa thèse sur la nature trompeuse des sens (…). Point remarquable: on trouvera au livre I de l'ouvrage la formulation d'un curieux cogito (…) qui précède de trois ans le Discours de la méthode, il est peut-être le fruit de discussions avec Descartes (…). Les livres III et IV, coeur de l'ouvrage, sont consacrés à la justification du principe fondamental de l'obéissance au Prince qu'illustrent des exemples empruntés aux épisodes de la Ligue et des Guerres de religion" (cf. Si le titre annonce une suite qui ne parut jamais, 'De la Certitude des connoissances humaines' fut plus tard réimprimé par l'auteur à la suite de son 'Ministre d'Etat'. (Brunet, V, 381. A proposito degli studi leonardiani sul moto uniformemente accellerato applicato alla caduta libera e del suo pensiero fisico in rapporti con gli scienziati precedenti e successivi. Fino ad oggi l'analisi degli storici della scienza era basata sugli scritti pubblicati quali i Dialoghi sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo. Questo ha portato a credere, come per esempio nel caso di Koyrè, che le uniche indagini eseguite con metodo scientifico da Galileo fossero le osservazioni astronomiche e che viceversa le enunciazioni sulle leggi della meccanica fossero dovute più a speculazioni dell'intelletto che ad esperimenti compiuti. Questa convinzione si basava sull'ipotesi che Galileo non potesse eseguire misure precise per esempio sui pendoli tali da poterne dedurre le leggi del moto. Questa tesi, radicata fin dal 1932 viene totalmente contraddetta dal lavoro di Drake sugli appunti originali del Galilei. Questi appunti, pieni di numeri, simboli, abbreviazioni, vengono descritti in questo libro e da essi emerge come i dati che Galileo aveva ottenuto dai suoi esperimenti fossero molto precisi. Emerge che la precisione era una delle sue maggiori preoccupazioni e che sfruttava ogni occasione per migliorarla, sia raffinando gli strumenti sia eseguendo misure incrociate con tecniche diverse. Se questa è la tesi centrale del libro di Drake, non da meno è il resto del saggio che si presenta come una descrizione dell'intera opera di Galileo in rapporto ai suoi antecedenti storici. Drake spiega le concezioni cosmologiche e fisiche del periodo medievale che si rifanno a quelle dell'antica Grecia mostrando come Galileo fosse un profondo conoscitore di queste opere e come attraverso un itinerario critico e scientifico egli le avesse superate. "Una volta Einstein ci consigliò che, nel cercare di comprendere il pensiero di uno scienziato creativo, dovremmo prestare attenzione non tanto a ciò che egli dice, ma a quello che fa. Ciò che fece Galileo è noto principalmente grazie agli appunti conservati in pagine contenenti diagrammi e calcoli ma poche o nessuna parola. Ciò che egli disse nei suoi libri era basato su ciò che aveva fatto, ma fu frequentemente interpretato in maniera scorretta perché avevamo solo informazioni sporadiche sul lavoro che stava dietro le sue parole. In astronomia, ciò che Galileo aveva fatto era detto nelle sue relazioni di osservazioni e scoperte al telescopio, escluse le misurazioni e i calcoli che stanno dietro l’astronomia dei satelliti. Nel campo della fisica, il lavoro di Galileo rimaneva oggetto di speculazioni. Durante gli ultimi quindici anni, la situazione è notevolmente cambiata in entrambi i campi. Abbiamo ora una sostanziale quantità d informazioni sulle misurazioni e sui calcoli di Galileo sia in fisica sia in astronomia". Stilman Drake Drake ha contribuito moltissimo al rinnovamento dell’interesse per Galileo, curando la traduzione in inglese del Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo e di altre opere del grande scienziato pisano e scrivendo sulla sua figura pagine preziose. "Simili profonde contemplazioni si aspettano a più alte dottrine che le nostre: ed a noi deve bastare d’essere quei men degni artefici, che dalle fodine [cave] scoprono e cavano i marmi, ne i quali poi gli scultori industri fanno apparire meravigliose immagini, che sotto roza ed informe scorza stavan ascoste”. Avignon Jean-Baptiste Giroud 1764-(1766) 1 vol. relié 3 parties reliées en un vol. in-8, basane fauve mouchetée, dos à nerfs, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, caissons ornés de fleurons et dentelle dorés, 288 + 101 + 51 pp. L'Éloge de Duguay-Trouin (parue en 1761) occupe les pp. 143 à 202 de la première partie. Les pp. 10 à 54 contiennent le poème sur l'assassinat de Jumonville en Amérique (paru pour la première fois en 1759). Cette première partie offre en outre une Ode à Moreau de Séchelles et les éloges de Maurice de Saxe, Daguesseau et du duc de Sully. La deuxième partie contient l'Éloge de Descartes et la troisième celle de Louis Dauphin de France (1766). Manque la quatrième partie (discours de réception). Coins émoussés, petit manque de cuir à la coiffe supérieur et quelques épidermures, sinon exemplaire convenable.

Raccolta di scritti di quest'A. fra i quali si segnalano una serie di biografie in forme di elogio (Eloge de Maurice Comte de Sax; Eloge de Henri-Francois Daguesseau; Eloge de Rene' Duguay-Trouin). Questi elogi, ciascuno con proprio fr., sono inseriti con numerazione consecutiva nella prima opera dal titolo Oeuvres diverses. Seguono due odi e un poemetto, 'Jumonville', in Poesies diverses. Poi, ciascuno con fr. autonomo, altri tre elogi fra i quali e' di particolare interesse quello di Cartesio. In quest'opera, Thomas sostiene che l'apparizione di Newton abbia distrutto la fama di Cartesio secondo la teoria in base alla quale le scoperte di uno scienziato o di un filosofo vengono superate da quelle di personaggi che appaiono temporalmente piu' tardi. Lo stesso tema verra' ripreso da Leopardi - che si rifa' proprio a Thomas - nella Storia dell'astronomia. L'A. (1732-1785), poeta e critico, noto cultore di encomiastica, fu membro dal 1760 dell'Acade'mie di Parigi.
