Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1857. 16296pp. 19th century morocco and cloth bound without the wrappers but with the half-title. Spine extremities considerably rubbed internally very good or better. First edition. An important gathering of Kierkegaard's articles from the FAEDRELANDET the KJOBENHAVNS FLYVENDE POST and other journals both signed and pseudonymous 1836- 56 and therefore the first edition in book form of many of Kierkegaard's earliest published writings accompanied by the first extensive bibliography of SK's writings pp.274-96 compiled by his sometimes friend and disciple Rasmus Nielsen. Essentially this work is the first substantive publication of Kierkegaard's writings following his death in 1855 and presents a number of items of great importance including his 12 June 1842 attack on Hegelianism matters pertaining to the authorship of ENTEN - ELLER his response to Professor Heiberg his crucial address to Moller of 27 December 1845 wherein he revealed Moller's association with the CORSAIR thereby giving birth to the vicious attack the CORSAIR made on him etc. A very interesting and important work. Kierkegaard Soren
SYNSPUNKTET FOR MIN FORFATTER-VIRKSOMHED. EN LIGEFREM MEDDELELSE RAPPORT TIL HISTORIEN. THE POINT OF VIEW FOR MY WORK AS AN AUTHOR
Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1859. 21141pp. Contemporary quarter calf and boards small nick at fore-edge of lower board lower joint cracked at toe otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this work of substantial import in the author's canon first written in 1848 contemporary with Kierkegaard's preparation of the second edition of ENTEN=ELLER but withheld from publication then and first issued posthumously. Its intent was to counter the suggestion that Kierkegaard as a literary artist had lapsed and turned to religion only in his later years. In this work he explains that his entire body of publications both aesthetic and religious is part of an intentional and balanced attempt to present concurrently published texts of both types simultaneously approaching the same issues from two different points of view. As such this essay is one of the most significant of Kierkegaard's analytic works. The NUC locates 5 copies. HIMMELSTRUP 292. Reitzels Forlag hardcover books

Enten-Eller: Et Livs-Fragment Either/Or: A Fragment
Copenhagen Denmark: C.A. Reitzel 1843. First Edition. Very Good. First edition. iii-xx 2 470; viii 368 pp. Two volumes bound in quarter calf with raised bands gilt tooling and marbled paper boards plain endpapers. Lacking half-title of first volume but second volume's is present. Text in Danish. Very Good with slightly sunned spines former owner's name on titles tears to half-title and title in second volume have been skillfully repaired light marginal dampstaining to top centre of both volumes occasional light foxing. A pleasant set with bright gilt. Either/Or Danish philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard's groundbreaking first published work. Only 525 copies of this edition were published in 1843 under an editorial pseudonym "Victor Emerita" at the author's own expense. It was mostly written during his stay in Berlin where he took notes on Schelling's Philosophy of Revelation. It includes essays of literary and music criticism and a set of romantic-like-aphorisms as part of his larger theme of examining the reflective and philosophical structure of faith. He is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. "As a thinker Kierkegaard had to wait for the twentieth century to find his audience; he is now generally considered to be however eccentric one of the most important Christian philosophers" write Carter and Muir in Printing and the Mind of Man.
