Vita e pensiero sono così strettamente uniti in K. che tutta la sua opera di scrittore è l'espressione del dramma della propria interiore esperienza dal breve periodo di vita mondana e gaudente estetica al fidanzamento con Regina Olsen che doveva aprire la fase etica della sua esistenza dalla rottura del fidanzamento con cui s'inizia lo stadio religioso della sua vita alle polemiche con il giornale umoristico Der Korsar 1845-46 e con il vescovo di Danimarca H. Martensen dal dic. 1854 con cui K. iniziò la lotta contro la chiesa ufficiale di Danimarca intensamente proseguita nel periodico �jeblikket Il Momento da lui fondato pochi mesi prima della morte. Il problema fondamentale di K. è quello dell'esistenza cristiana dell'individuo che lo induce a farsi scrittore per rendere attenti gli uomini a ciò che è il cristianesimo e distogliere la cristianità dall'immaginazione di esserlo già esponendosi per questo a essere perseguitato con lo scherno e la derisione che sono per K. la sofferenza specificamente cristiana e quindi a polemizzare contro ogni speculazione metafisica sistematica oggettiva intellettualistica che in quanto tale è per lui astrazione ossia prescinde da ciò che per il cristianesimo è l'unica realtà la realtà etica dell'individuo. Pertanto al razionalismo di G. W. F. Hegel espressione massima per K. di tale speculazione oggettiva viene opposto il pensiero soggettivo o esistenziale che dà fondamento e giustificazione alla realtà e al valore dell'individuo il singolo e alla sua esistenza attraverso gli stad� estetico etico religioso. Tra queste tre possibilità nel cammino della vita l'individuo ha il dovere di scegliere e di decidere per l'ultima quella della fede religosa che nella coscienza del peccato in timore e tremore lo pone solo di fronte all'incomprensibile Dio per fondarlo trasparente in lui nel superamento dell'angoscia e della disperazione. Il pensiero di K. è stato studiato e valorizzato in Germania nel periodo che va dagli anni immediatamente precedenti a quelli che seguirono la prima guerra mondiale Kierkegaard-Renaissance e quindi negli altri paesi prestando parecchi motivi e suggestioni il singolo l'angoscia ecc. alla filosofia dell'esistenza o esistenzialismo.
