‎KIERKEGAARD SREN. THE UPBUILDING DISCOURSES‎

‎Atten opbyggelige Taler.‎

‎Kjbenhavn Copenhagen 1843-1845. 8vo. Near contemporary half calf with richly gilt spine. Binding with very light wear. Front free end-paper with the ownership-inscription of Michael Bentzon and his acquisition date of 1855 the same year that Kierkegaard died. Some brownspotting here and there and the first couple of leaves of "To opbyggelige Taler 1844" with a damp stain. Neat underlinings in the text as well as several marginalia mostly in pencil. A very good copy indeed. IV 52 62 84 59 70 111pp. Complete with all the half-titles and the joint title-page without the blank leaf after the preface of "To opbyggelige Taler 1844" - which is not called for and hardly ever present. First edition of Kierkegaard's important eighteen upbuilding discourses which comprise his two three and four upbuilding discourses from the years 1843-45 with the joint title-page of all eighteen. The work constitutes Kierkegaard's religious works which supplement his theological and philosophical ones.

The first upbuilding discourses were published the same year as Either-Or and it is interesting to note that in opposition to his major philosophical works the religious upbuilding discourses actually bear the name of the author on the title-page -a fact that was by no means incidental. While the pseudonymous works could make one doubt the religiousness of the author the parallelly written religious discourses stress the fact that we are dealing with an author who was religious from the very beginning -a fact that Kierkegaard also wished to establish himself; in his journals he clearly states that the religious discourses bear as much significance for his work as a whole as do the larger pseudonymous works "I began with "Either-Or" and two upbuilding discourses." he says and explains that he intended the upbuilding the religious to advance and that he wanted to show "that the writer was not an esthetic author who in the course of time grew older and for that reason became religious" Journals IX A 227.

The importance of the upbuilding discourses and the close relationship they have with the major works and Kierkegaard's philosophical development also becomes evident with the fact that every pseudonymous work was accompanied by a little collection of "upbuilding discourses" until "Concluding Postscript" appeared.

Himmelstrup 85. unknown‎

‎Indvelse i Christendom. Af Anti-Climacus. Nr. I. II. III. Udgivet af S. Kierkegaard Training in Christianity. By Anti-Climacus. Nr. I. II. III. Published by S. Kierkegaard.‎

‎Kjbenhavn Copenhagen 1850. 8vo. Beautiful newer half calf in old style with richkly gilt spine by the renowed Danish female book binder Rigmor Birkedahl Kragh. A bit of brownspotting. A lvery nice copy. 4 277 pp. First edition written under the pseudonym of Anti-Climacus which constitutes one of the most Kierkegaardian works in which he treats his central problematic: How to become a Christian in Christendom. The work also constitutes a fierce attack on the Danish church.

This work points to the essence of Kierkegaard's religious-philosophical writings and he here describes the personal suffering that comes with being a Christian. Christ is considered the rlemodel and true Christendom consists in following him. Thus the Christian will also suffer for his faith though no man shall become a martyr for the truth. Kierkegaard thus also distinguishes sharply between the established triumphant church and the true struggling one which comes to constitute the essence of his attack on the Danish Church.

Sren Kierkegaard the father of existentialism became of seminal importance to not only Danish thought but worldwide as one of the most important thinkers of his time. He seminally influenced the fields of philosophy theology psychology and literature and not only did he found what is known as existentialism and attempt to renew Christian faith with Christendom with his influential and controversial critiques of Hegel and the German romantics he also changed the course of philosophy of the second half of the 19th century.

Himmelstrup 121. unknown‎

‎KIERKEGAARD.‎

‎A COMPLETE COLLECTION OF SREN KIERKEGAARD'S WORKS - ALL FIRST EDITIONS.

A beautiful and highly decorative set almost completely in contemporary and original state - and including a presentation-copy. Without doubt the most magnificent Kierkegaard-set that we have ever collected.

Here we have collected all of his works in first editions - which is not too easy a task apart from two of the works which were printed in ab. 250 and 100 copies respectively the rest were printed in ab. 525 copies each - and attempted to make the very best set that one could ever hope for.

Sren Kierkegaard the legendary founder of existentialism who "is now generally considered to be however eccentric one of the most important Christian philosophers" PMM left nothing to coincidence in any of his writings and they are all in their many different ways important to the understanding of this great thinker.‎

‎Kbenhavn 1838-59. Among the highlights of this spectacular collection we can mention briefly:

FROM THE PAPERS OF ONE STILL LIVING - his first published work namely the work in which he sharply criticizes Hans Christian Andersen and ridicules the genre of fairy tales in general - in an unusually large copy completely uncut and in a very elegant paper binding in Kierkegaard's own preferred style. nr. 1

ON THE CONCEPT OF IRONY - his thesis about Socrates being his second published work - here with the "Theses" which are often lacking and which means that it's one of the fewer copies that was intended for colleagues at the university not regular trade. The first page of the Theses has the day "XXIX" of September written in hand. nr. 2

EITHER-OR PMM 315 - his main work one of the most important works of philosophy of modern times which seminally influenced later as well as contemporary philosophy - in a stunning copy one of the loveliest we have ever seen. nr. 3

THE CONCEPT OF DREAD - which formed the basis for existential psychology and in which Kierkegaard heavily attacks the philosophy of Hegel - in a beautiful pastiche-binding of the highest quality. The book is said to have appeared in merely 250 copies which has not actually been verified but it is a fact that it was issued in a significantly smaller number than the other works apart from "Sexten opbyggelige Taler" which is the rarest of all of his books. nr. 7

SEXTEN OPBYGGELIGE TALER - is of the utmost scarcity and is extremely difficult to come by. To our knowledge it has never before been included in any collection of Kierkegaard works in first editions that has been for sale. The book consists of the popular Two Three and Four Upbuilding Discourses. The unsold copies of these "Opbyggelige Taler" "Upbuilding Discourses" were initially collected under the title "Atten opbyggelige Taler" Eighteen Upbuilding Discourses and published with a collected title-page; when "To opbyggelige Taler" "Two Upbuilding Discourses" from 1843 was sold out the remaining sixteen upbuilding discourses were published with the title-page "Sexten opbyggelige Taler" - hence the number of copies of this rare title is said to be well under 100 ! and is thus by far the rarest of all of Kierkegaard's books. nr. 11a

CONCLUDING UNSCIENTIFIC POSTSCRIPT TO THE PHILOSOPHICAL FRAGMENTS - which besides being one of the most philosophically important of Kierkegaard's publications also reveals one of the most important "secrets" of this philosophical giant: The authorship of not only his main work and the main work of existentialism "Either-Or" but also of all of his pseudonymous works - in a splendid copy in most excellent condition. nr. 12

TRAINING IN CHRISTIANITY - which constitutes one of the most Kierkegaardian of all of his works. It is here that he treats his central problematic: How to become a Christian in Christendom. The work also constitutes a fierce attack on the Danish church and was extremely controversial - here in a magnificent presentation-copy bound in Kierkegaard's signature gift binding with an original handwritten presentation-inscription on the front free end-paper reading: "Til/ hjrvrdige Hr./ Pastor Dr. Rudelbach/ Venskabeligt/fra/ Udgiveren." For the honourable/Mr. Vicar Doctor Rudelbach/ With friendship/ from/ the publisher because he mentions himself as the publisher and not the author on the title-page he also signs his presentation as the publisher -the real author according to Kierkegaard is Anti-Climacus. nr. 21

Andreas Gottlob Rudelbach 1792-1862 was a well known Danish theologian and writer. He studied theology received his master's degree in 1820 and his doctor's degree in 1822 because of his dissertation on Greek and Christian ethics. He was an orthodox Lutheran theologian and thus naturally critisized the prevailing rationalism of the time. For a while he sympathized with the views of Grundtvig with whom he issued the "Thoelogical Monthly" 1825-28. Due to his views he was not given a position at the University of Copenhagen and in 1829 he was summoned to Sachsen in Germany as the Superintendent there. Here he continued his attacks on the rationalists and he fought against the union of the Lutherans and the Reformists. In 1845 tired of fighting for his cause and breaking definitively with Grundtvig he returned to Denmark where in 1848 he became the parish priest of Slagelse.
Rudelbach played a great role in the development of Christianity in Denmark in the Golden Age and for Kierkegaard he was an important figure personally as well as officially. Rudelbach was a frequent guest in the Kierkegaard home on Nytorv in the centre of Copenhagen where Kierkegaard lived for many years and he frequently discussed with him. He also officially considered and commented on the Christian views and opinions of Rudelbach and does this especially around the time of his "Training in Christianity". Before 1845 and his relocation to Denmark Rudelbach had opposed Grundtvig in propounding reformation of the church; Kierkegaard is against this reformation which suggests political means of reformation and Kierkegaard instead insists that the church needs to be dismantled and be rebuilt anew on spiritual terms. He writes an article about this roughly at the same time that he is working on his "Training in Christianity" and there is no doubt that much of his thought is prompted by Rudelbach. In a famous quotation from his diaries from the same year that "Training in Christianity" appears Kierkegaard states "Dr. Rudelbach and I. We will never understand each other. Although the two frequently discussed Christianity and Grundtvig's ideas of Christianity there were many things that they did not agree upon. For instance around the appearance of "Training in Christianity" Rudelbach openly accuses Kierkegaard for distinguishing between the true church and the Christianity of the State wherto Kierkegaard openly answered that although he was a "hater of the habitual Christianity" he did not wish for reform on the outside only on the inside.

There are few contemporaries as important for Kierkegaard's ideas on Christianity and more specifically for his important work "Training in Christianity" as Dr. Rudelbach and the present copy is thus one of the most interesting presentation-copies that one could wish for of the present work. In all five intact presentation-copies incuding the present one are known from Kierkegaard to Rudelbach and apart from those we know of a few presentation-leaves that are torn out of the works in which they belonged.

. and we could mention many more that have had a profound influence upon the development of philosophy and thought of the 19th and 20th centuries. 1 Af en endnu Levendes Papirer. His work crosses the boundaries of philosophy theology psychology literary criticism devotional literature and fiction. Kierkegaard brought this potent mixture of discourses to bear as social critique and for the purpose of renewing Christian faith within Christendom. At the same time he made many original conceptual contributions to each of the disciplines he employed. He is known as the "father of existentialism" but at least as important are his critiques of Hegel and of the German romantics his contributions to the development of modernism his literary experimentation his vivid re-presentation of biblical figures to bring out their modern relevance his invention of key concepts which have been explored and redeployed by thinkers ever since his interventions in contemporary Danish church politics and his fervent attempts to analyse and revitalise Christian faith." Himmelstrup 85.

First edition of Kierkegaard's important eighteen upbuilding discourses which comprise his two three and four upbuilding discourses from the years 1843-45 with the joint title-page of all eighteen. The work constitutes Kierkegaard's religious works which supplement his theological and philosophical ones.
The first upbuilding discourses were published the same year as Either-Or and it is interesting to note that in opposition to his major philosophical works the religious upbuilding discourses actually bear the name of the author on the title-page - a fact that was by no means incidental.

Himmelstrup 85. hardcover‎

The pages are left unpaginated divided from the rest of the book with a blank leaf and printed with a smaller type with the rest which clearly indicates for the reader that these pages are not part of the actual text but something different that must be noticed.

The postscript to the "Postscript" begins thus own translation: "For the sake of manners and etiquette I hereby acknowledge what can hardly in reality be of interest to anybody to know that I am as one says the author of Either-Or Victor Eremita Copenhagen in February 1843; Fear and Trembling Johannes de Silentio 1843; Repetition ConstantinConstantius 1843; On the Concept of Dread Virgilius Hafniensis 1844; Preface Nicolaus Notabene 1844; Philosophical Fragments Johannes Climacus 1844; Stages on Life's Way Hilarius Bogbinder: William Asham The Assessor Frater Taciturnus 1845; Concluding Postscript to The Philosophical Fragments Johannes Climacus 1846; an article in "Fdrelandet" January 1846 Frater Taciturnus." And he then goes on to tell about the significance that his chosen pseudonyms bear why he writes under these and what his relationship to them is -questions that none the less continue to puzzle philosophers to this day and which seem be bear part of the key to the question of the person Kierkegaard and his philosophical writings. unknown‎

See Sren Kierkegaard Mindeudstilling nr. 108.

The three Communion-speeches are theologically centered around the meaning of substitution the dialectic of self-delusion and the transformation of the subject by conversion.

Johan Ludvig Heiberg 1791-1860 was the main cultural figure of the 19th century in Denmark. He hugely influenced all of Danish culture within this period and he must be considered the patron of Copenhagen's literati. He was very influential as a thinker in general and he changed Danish philosophy seminally by introducing Hegel to the Northern country. As thus there is no doubt as to the rle that Heiberg directly or indirectly played in the life of Kierkegaard and this is a presentation-copy that links together two of the giants of Danish culture. Kierkegaard viewed himself as somewhat of an outsider and it was of great importance to him to try and enter the famous literary and cultural circle of Heiberg.

Himmelstrup 120. hardcover‎
