S. KIERKEGAARD'S BLADARTIKLER MED BILAG SAMLEDE EFTER FOR FATTERENS DOD UDGIVNE SOM SUPPLEMENT TIL HANS OVRIGE SKRIFTER AF R. NEILSEN
Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1857. 16296pp. 19th century morocco and cloth bound without the wrappers but with the half-title. Spine extremities considerably rubbed internally very good or better. First edition. An important gathering of Kierkegaard's articles from the FAEDRELANDET the KJOBENHAVNS FLYVENDE POST and other journals both signed and pseudonymous 1836- 56 and therefore the first edition in book form of many of Kierkegaard's earliest published writings accompanied by the first extensive bibliography of SK's writings pp.274-96 compiled by his sometimes friend and disciple Rasmus Nielsen. Essentially this work is the first substantive publication of Kierkegaard's writings following his death in 1855 and presents a number of items of great importance including his 12 June 1842 attack on Hegelianism matters pertaining to the authorship of ENTEN - ELLER his response to Professor Heiberg his crucial address to Moller of 27 December 1845 wherein he revealed Moller's association with the CORSAIR thereby giving birth to the vicious attack the CORSAIR made on him etc. A very interesting and important work. Kierkegaard Soren
GUDS UNFORANDERLIGHED. EN TALE. THE UNCHANGEABLENESS OF GOD
Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1855. 222pp. Disbound. Minor foxing at extreme edges but a very good copy. First edition of this sermon first delivered by Kierkegaard in May of 1851 and finally published within two months of his death. On the occasion of its composition Kierkegaard was fully embroiled in his conflict with the State Church. Nonetheless it indicates that despite the conflict he remained concerned with "Christian edification." The thrust of the sermon is that while the immutability of God is a source of terror for those who would mock him it is also one of the great sources of strength for those who show devotion to the "Father of Lights with whome can be no variation neither shadow that is cast by turning." DETTE SKAL SIGES; SAA VAERE DET DA DAGT THIS HAS TO BE SAID; SO BE IT NOW SAID
Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1855. 12pp. Disbound. Light foxing otherwise near fine. First edition of one of the most direct of Kierkegaard's attacks on the official Church of Denmark a polemic which led to his fear of arrest. In this short but concisely worded tract he insists that true Christians should immediately cease their participation in the public worship sanctioned by the Church and await its cleansing of all affiliations with the State. HVAD CHRISTUS DOMMER OM OFFICIAL CHRISTENDOM WHAT CHRIST'S JUDGMENT IS ABOUT OFFICIAL CHRISTIANITY
Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1855. 14pp. Extracted from bound pamphlet volume. Scattered foxing otherwise near very good. First edition of this severe attack on the official Christian Church in Denmark issued in the context of Kierkegaard's continuing publication of THE INSTANT 16 June 1855. In this brief work Kierkegaard modifies some of his earliest views such as those on marriage and demands of the true Christian an almost literal imitation of Christ requiring a renunciation of the world and sinful earthly life for a life as a true witness for Christ with consequent suffering and denial of egoism. In answer to the title query he asserts that Christ's judgment upon official state -sanctioned Christianity would be extremely harsh. HIMMELSTRUP 199. Reitzels Forlag unknown

SYNSPUNKTET FOR MIN FORFATTER-VIRKSOMHED. EN LIGEFREM MEDDELELSE RAPPORT TIL HISTORIEN. THE POINT OF VIEW FOR MY WORK AS AN AUTHOR
Copenhagen: Reitzels Forlag 1859. 21141pp. Contemporary quarter calf and boards small nick at fore-edge of lower board lower joint cracked at toe otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this work of substantial import in the author's canon first written in 1848 contemporary with Kierkegaard's preparation of the second edition of ENTEN=ELLER but withheld from publication then and first issued posthumously. Its intent was to counter the suggestion that Kierkegaard as a literary artist had lapsed and turned to religion only in his later years. In this work he explains that his entire body of publications both aesthetic and religious is part of an intentional and balanced attempt to present concurrently published texts of both types simultaneously approaching the same issues from two different points of view. As such this essay is one of the most significant of Kierkegaard's analytic works. The NUC locates 5 copies. HIMMELSTRUP 292. Reitzels Forlag hardcover

LE BANQUET IN VINO VERITAS
Paris: Librairie Felix Alcan 1933. Original printed wrappers. A fine unopened copy in original glassine. One of two translations of IN VINO VERITAS which appeared in the same year in France preceding the 1940 publication in English in STAGES ON LIFE'S WAY. This work loosely modeled after Plato's SYMPOSIUM is a rather well-executed derisive attack upon women and the "feminine." In STAGES. it was immediately counterpointed by a defense of marriage as an ethical institution by "Judge William." Of this work Arbaugh and Arbaugh state: "Its subtle and effective employment of varied literary devices and styles is as great or greater than in any of S.K.'s other writings." HIMMELSTRUP 1541.
