The covers are lightly rubbed. The original pictorial front wrapper is bound in. viii & 264 pages profusely illustrated in aqua and white by John O'Hara Cosgrave II. Pages 55 through 80 are darkened. Very good.</p><p>Second printing of the Pocket Book edition.</p><p>"In 1943 Louis Untermeyer made a selection from the work of Robert Frost and added a biographical introduction as well as a running commentary on the poetry. The book entitled "Come In" was published by Henry Holt and Company.Now Mr. Untermeyer has extended "Come In" especially for Pocket Books and the present volume contains thirty additional poems and a greatly enlarged commentary." - from the Introduction.</p><p>The book is from the library of the Ambassador to Portugal Lincoln MacVeagh and is inscribed to him by the Second Secretary of the Embassy at Lisbon Elizabeth Humes. "For the Ambassador - w thanks for West Running Brook and all the others. Elizabeth Humes / Lisbon / Xmas '48." As a Director at Henry Holt and Company the publishers of "West Running Brook" MacVeagh became a close friend of Robert Frost.</p><p>Of Elizabeth Humes William J. Donovan the head of the OSS during World War 2 wrote on July 26 1941: "It is very rare that I find myself able to recommend any woman for intelligence workI can do so with confidence in the case of Miss Elizabeth Humes. Miss Humes has spent the last 25 years in Europe firstly under the Commercial Department.but transferred to the State Department as a Consular Official in I think 1938 or 1939. Speaks Italian French and German fluently and has a good knowledge of those countries. Is a good judge of political situations and information and very objective in views. Is particularly well informed about Italy and personalities in Italy. I know of no one to whom I would rather submit a report on Italy for an opinion as to exactitude and reliability. If our friend . wants a "good number" and could obtain the loan of her services from the State Department he would make no mistake. One reservation - she probably would not be interested in what is known as Security Intelligence. Her bent lies in the more active side."</p><p>From the library of Lincoln MacVeagh and his wife Margaret with their "Arcades Ambo" bookplate on the front paste down. Lincoln MacVeagh 1890-1972 a Renaissance man graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1913. He went on to study languages at the Sorbonne and became fluent in German French Spanish Latin Greek and Classical Greek. After World War I he became a director of the Henry Holt and Company publishing firm where he became friendly with the poet Robert Frost. In 1923 he left the firm and founded the Dial Press. His name appears on the imprint of many of their publications. In 1933 President Roosevelt appointed him Minister to Greece. He followed presentation of his credentials with a speech in Classical Greek. While in Greece he conducted excavations beneath the Acropolis and made archeological contributions to the National Museum in Athens. He left Greece in 1941 when the German army over ran the country. From there he was appointed the first US Minister to Iceland where he negotiated agreements for the construction of the Keflavik airfield. In late 1942 he became Minister to the Union of South Africa and coordinated American wartime agencies there. In 1943 he was sent to Cairo as Ambassador so that he could assist the governments in exile of Greece and Yugoslavia. He returned to Athens as Ambassador in 1944. MacVeagh gave secret testimony before Congress concerning the Balkans in 1947 testimony that was an important factor in the formation of the Truman Doctrine. In 1948 as Ambassador to Portugal MacVeagh was influential in admitting her into NATO. In 1952 President Truman named him Ambassador to Spain. President Truman wrote to him on March 9 1948: "On the occasion of your appointment as Ambassador to Portugal I would like to make some personal expression of appreciation for the high services you have already rendered your country. During the past fifteen critical years you have served with distinction as Chief of the United states Missions to Iceland the Union of South Africa Yugoslavia and Greece. In this last post especially - as Minister from 1933 to 1941 and as Ambassador since 1943 - your scholarly statesmanship and diplomatic judgment have been of the utmost value."</p> New York: Pocket Books, Inc., (1946). hardcover

JU 6-0028. Produced by Julie Styne songwriter and composer of many musicals. Julie Styne brought Pal Joey back to Broadway on January 3 1952 winning awards and resulting in a London premiere in 1954 of which this playscript attends. Laid in is a typed letter from Jack Buchanan's office who was the producer of this London production The letter is written by Gilbert Brown genera manager for Jack Buchanan informing an English actress Elsie Randolph that the Americans have decided in sending an American actress to perform her perceived role signed by Brown. Each issue was filled with tan letters box office totals newspaper items reviews announcements of coming performances and theatrical appearances as well as personal information. O’Hara 1920-2015 was born Maureen FitzSimons and is perhaps best remembered for her iconic portrayals of hard-headed and athletic women. She typically performed her own stunts and played roles ranging from the cynical mother of Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th Street 1947 to the Quiet Man Wings of Eagles McClintock! and Big Jake starring with John Wayne. With a torn advertisement for "Pipe Night" printed in the "New York Herald Tribune Weekly Book Review March 18 1945" tucked in. Bruccoli A.8.1.a. the spine on this copy is lettered in black- Bruccoli states that it is "goldstamped". John O'Hara 1905-1970 was born in Pottsville Pennsylvania where he was raised in an Irish Catholic household. After high school and the death of his father he traveled extensively before working as a critic and reporter in New York City. O'Hara's fiction often depicted the social dynamics of upwardly mobile Americans from the 1920s through the 1940s. "O'Hara was fascinated by the effect of class money and sexuality among Americans and his fictional representations of Hollywood and Broadway are thick with the snobbery of social structure." - Britannica.com. His novel "Ten North Frederick" won the National Book Award in 1956 and was turned into a major feature film. He is also credited with helping to popularize "The New Yorker" magazine short story style.<br /> <br /> Thirty-one stories more than a quarter which had not been previously published. Warmly inscribed on the very day of publication according to Bruccoli by the author to his publisher on the front free endpaper: "To Sam Sloan / gentleman scholar / man of courage / sensitive associate of / John O'Hara / New York / 14 March 1945." The music contains popular songs of the time such as arias from Italian operas and folksongs from Ireland and other countries linked by dialogue set to recitative.
