There is a band of toning along the top edges of boards. Binding and hinges tight intact and straight. Gyp was labeled a "right-wing anarchist" and is considered one of the most provocative figures in fin-de-siecle France. OCLC Number: 10801330 12 locations half in the U.S. The author published a large number of satyrical novels and an autobiography under the name: "Gyp." Really she was Sibylle Aim�e Marie-Antoinette Gabrielle de Riquetti de Mirabeau Comtesse de Martel de Janville 1849-1932. The well-born author was the daughter of Joseph-Arundel de Riquetti comte de Mirabeau who was the great-grandson of Victor de Riquetti marquis de Mirabeau Mirabeau P�re noted 18th century economist and also the grandnephew of Honor� Mirabeau. Her mother was a writer as well. At the age of 20 Sibylle married count Roger de Martel de Janville; they had three children. She adopted the pen name "Gyp" in 1880 and spent much of the rest of her long life writing about 120 books under that short name. In many respects she was derogatory about high society and had strong opinions about the divisive questions of her time. She suppored Gen. Boulanger the would-be dictator she was violently opposed to republicanism and populist democracy. Not surprisingly she was an anti-Dreyfusard and a fanatical anti-Semite. These opinions made her the target of at least three attempts at assassination as well as a sensational kidnapping. The date of this novel -- 'Le Cricri' is supplied at the foot of the ads on the page facing the title page: "Published 21 mars 1907." The mixed language can be explained as an attempt to assert U.S.A. copyright. An excellently preserved copy clean and tight in the wrappers which display only minor wear along the edges and the ends of the spine; the tip of the lower rear corner is missing. . Paris - Calmann-Levy 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Bound in hlaf leather with marble paper-covered boards and gilt lettering. Gyp was the pseudonym for Sibylle Aime Marie Antoinette Gabrielle de Riquetti de MirabeauComtesse de Martel de Janville 1849-1932. She was the author of over twenty novels the best-known of which is probably Le Mariage de Chiffon which was made into a film in 1942. She wrote slightly satirical sketches and novels aimed at her own fashionable society. She had very decided political views and on two occasions survived an assasination attempt. This volume is in French. This volume contains the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman Cameron 1860-1944 who was a significant member of Washington society in the 1870's and friends with Edith Wharton. She married Senator James Donald Cameron in 1878 but later became estranged from her husband and moved to Europe with their daughter Martha. She was thought to have had a long-term affair with Henry Adams grandson of John Quincy Adams. Condition: The binding is reasonably firm with the boards and all internal pages attached although the front hinge has split revealing the cords and causing the spine to crack. There issome wear to the extremities includingrubbing and fadingto the boards bumping to the corners andfraying to the leather spine. Internally the pages are generally clean with theoccasional brown spotor handling mark. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown asdescribed above. The condition of this volume isgood only.
