He wrote this novel in a way that would force his publisher Horace Liverwright to refuse it & thus break contract. It parodies Liverwright's star author Sherwood Anderson. He was then able to take up a more lucrative offer from Scribner's. The novel relates the intersecting lives of WWI veteran Yogi Johnson & writer Scripps O'Neill both of whom work at a pump factory. Both are searching for the perfect woman. O'Neill takes mescaline & hallucinates he is President of Mexico. Johnson is cured of his impotence when viewing a naked squaw he is overcome by "a new feeling" which he immediately attribute to Mother Nature & together he & the squaw "light out for the territories" The hero is impotent. The hero of The Sun Also Rises suffered from a war wound preventing intercourse. Many of Hemingway's short stories from this period God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen also treat sexual dysfunction. Tho primarily a send-up of Anderson's poorly-esteemed negro novel Dark Laughter the literary proclivities of American & British writers close to Anderson such as D. H. Lawrence James Joyce & John Dos Passos are wound into the monkey-barrel of satire & parody.</p> Scribner hardcover‎

Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. Housed in a beautiful custom clamshell box. A stunning copy of Hemingway's first novel published in the same year as "The Sun Also Rises"; this novella length work originated as a satire of Sherwood Anderson's "Dark Laughter" which Hemingway thought was sub par; Hemingway's original publisher Boni & Liveright rejected Torrents most likely because the book parodied it's most popular author; F. Scott Fitzgerald was instrumental in getting Max Perkins at Scribner's to take on Hemingway and thought Torrents was a masterpiece he and Hemingway were good friends at the time. Scribner's agreed to publish the novel along with future works; only 1250 copies of the book were originally published. This near fine copy is square and tight with only some light soiling to both top corners and the bottom of the front board a minor crimp to the bottom spine end a few pinpoint spots to the boards and some minor spotting to the paste downs free papers and the first dozen or so pages; the rear free end paper has a vertical crease that appears to be a printing error. Housed in a near fine dust jacket that is clean and exceptionally bright with none of the usual foxing and fading normally seen with this title. LIght soiling is present to panels and some light rubbing to the ends and edges else fine. Some indiscernible professional repair has been performed to a small area of both top and bottom edges and the top spine end. Overall a pristine copy of this very difficult to find book that should be on any Hemingway collector's bucket list; protected in a mylar cover. Scribner's hardcover‎

An early Grosset and Dunlap edition of this novel set in the US by Ernest Hemingway published the same year as Scribner's first edition. An early Grosset &amp; Dunlap edition published by arrangement with Charles Scribner's who published the true first in the same year. The first copies of Grosset &amp; Dunlap's edition carried Scribner's 'A' to the limitation page however this later copy from the same year has 'TU' printed in its place. Bound in the publisher's bright red cloth. 'To Have and Have Not' follows a fishing boat captain in Florida written by Hemingway sporadically between 1936 and 1937 as he travelled back and forth from Spain during the Civil War.In 1944 this novel was adapted into a film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.Pencil inscription of H. A. Mason possibly that of lecturer and critic Harold A. Mason. Bound in the publisher's red cloth. Externally excellent with minor bumping to the extremities and slight fading to the spine.
