Second State DJ. DL consignment. Shelved Room C. Ernest Hemingway was born July 21 1899 in Oak Park Illinois an affluent Chicago suburb. In 1928 Hemingway and his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer would move to Key West Florida Hemingway himself moving regularly between Florida and Wyoming where he developed a love of hunting. In 1933 Hemingway and Pfeiffer would go on safari to Kenya where Hemingway got much of the material he would use to write "Green Hills of Africa". <br /> <br /> "Green Hills of Africa" would be published first in serialization from May to November of 1935 before being published officially in October of the same year. Hemingway's second non-fiction work it would initially receive a cool reception though days and weeks after would come to receive more glowing reviews for its novel writing. Despite then and today being regarded as a magnificent work of nonfiction writing Hemingway would blame the books poor sales on initial bad reviews and the stories influenced by the women in his life. 1390168. A Very Good copy in like dust jacket. Book with spine toned and a faint dampstain to front board. Front inner hinge now professionally repaired. Price-clipped dust jacket with spine toned a large crease running down the front panel and some chipping and wear at the spine ends and extremities. Inscribed by the author: "For Daisy G. Roe Wishing her all good luck from her friend Ernest Hemingway. Key West March 18 1936." The recipient Daisey G. Roe was a Florida neighbor who had recently married up-and-coming politician and future Jacksonville Florida mayor Caulie F. Whitehead. Authentic signed Hemingway material is becoming scarce on the market. Housed in a custom green quarter-leather slipcase with chemise.<br /> <br /> After publishing Winner Take Nothing in 1933 "Hemingway went to Africa to shoot the bounding kudu and to reply to his critics. ‎London: Jonathan Cape 1936. Third impression. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo 284pp. illustrated. A delightfully unique copy of this UK edition of Hemingway's great memoir of hunting big game in Africa. Bound in tan rough-grained canvas cloth with handmade cut-out label depicting the head of a kudu much like the one which appears in print opposite the title page and Hemingway's name on a black label printed in green. The binder has very ably inserted the front and rear panels and flaps of the dust jacket also a stated third impression matching the book before and after the text and the top is silvered. The jacket has been trimmed slightly to fit within the book and it's possible that the page block was also slightly trimmed. The binding is rather plain but highly evocative of its subject; befitting Heminway's style. The contents are extremely fresh and clean; a fine example. The UK edition of "Green Hills of Africa" is quite uncommon; later reprints from 1944 and 1954 are much easier to obtain than any copies printed the first year of publication.
