Heavy scuffing and wear along the jacket edges and hinges. Several chips tears and associated creasing along the edges including a rough 1 inch tear at the upper edge. About ½ inch triangular loss of jacket at the upper rear spine and 1 inch loss of jacket at the lower spine. Spine toned. Minor soiling and staining to the jacket. Book faded with a small brown line stain to the upper front cover. Some scuffing and wear to the corners. Owner's name and address in ink on the first endpaper. Minor toning to the text block. The bibliographer Grissom dated this issue between 1953-55; an original receipt loosely inserted in this copy is dated 8 October 1954. Grissom further noted seeing a copy with a limitation statement handwritten on the binder's first blank. Formerly a film producer Bennett c.1884-1968 established Bennett Book Studios and Bindery in New York after becoming a book dealer in 1925. Hemingway's final work of fiction was published in 1952 winning the 1953 Pulitzer Prize and being cited for his receipt of the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. Octavo 199 x 128 mm. The contents with a previous owner's bookplate to the upper right corner of the front pastedown partially hidden by the dustwrapper flap are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the exceptionally clean and bright first printing dustwrapper that is lightly rubbed and creased to the extremities with a very short closed tear at the top of the upper spine fold secured with a small piece of tape to the underside. Not price-clipped $3.00 to the upper front flap. A very attractive example. The author's last major work of fiction published in his lifetime. The novella was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to their awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. Oblong quarto bound in one quarter morocco over cloth-covered boards illustrated with five photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt printed from the original negatives by Eisenstaedt in 1952 for the Life Magazine featuring the iconic image of Hemingway on the cover. One of only 600 copies signed by Alfred Eisenstaedt on the limitation page. In fine condition. Housed in the original black suede-lined cloth clamshell case. In a career that lasted more than 50 years German-born American photographer and photojournalist Alfred Eisenstaedt achieved fame as "the quintessential Life photographer" producing more than 90 cover photographs for the iconic magazine New York Times. An enthusiast for small 35 mm film cameras Eisenstaedt's style and technique allowed him to create more relaxed atmospheres when shooting famous people where he was able to capture more natural poses and expressions. His success at establishing a relaxed setting for his subjects was not without difficulties however during the epic photo shoot of Hemingway in his boat for the Life Magazine story of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea Hemingway was rumored to have ripped off his own shirt and threatened to throw Eisenstaedt overboard.
