HEMINGWAY ERNEST
For Whom the Bell Tolls
New York: Scribners 1940. Second printing. Signed presentation copy from Ernest Hemingway to his close childhood friend Bill Smith. Inscribed in black fountain pen ink using Hemingway’s boyhood nickname: “To Bill with much affection Wemedgeâ€. Bill and his sister Katy later married to John Dos Passos summered near the Hemingway home on Horton Bay Michigan. Ernest and Bill knew each other for many years as children before becoming close friends: “It took an old pal of mine Carl Edgar†Smith recalled “and most of the summer to put Ernest and me on really good terms.†In less than a few weeks the three were out at the Point fishing from the dock day and night. Smith in short order acquired a full quota of the nicknames that Hemingway invented for friends.while Hemingway for inexplicable reasons preferred to be called Wemedge.†See James R. Mellow - Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences pages 37-38 Hemingway who entertained fantasies that Katy Smith was secretly attracted to him would later create a fictional erotic relationship between the two in the “Nick Adams†stories. Adams’s nickname in the largely autobiographical series is Wemedge. Laid into the book is an original small photograph of Hemingway and Bill Smith fishing off the Key West in the 1930s which was reproduced in the 1992 Mellow biography of Hemingway. Front hinge expertly repaired else a very good copy with a little general cloth in a bright dust jacket with with a short 1 inch scratch on the spine light wear and two short tears to the rear panel. An exceptional Hemingway association copy enclosed in a morocco leather and cloth clamshell box. Scribners hardcover books

HEMINGWAY Ernest
For Whom The Bell Tolls
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1955. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Inscribed by Hemingway to his very close friend and fishing buddy Charles Thompson: "For Lorine and Charles with love from Ernest. Sept. 20 1957." Near fine copy in sun-tanned dust jacket chipped at the head. A choice association copy of one of Hemingway's most enduring works.

The decade or so that Hemingway lived in Key West were among his most productive years as a writer. He wrote in the mornings fished in the afternoons and often spent his evenings drinking with friends. One of those friends many say his best friend was Charles Thompson the owner of a marine hardware store and a couple of other businesses. Charles went on an African safari with Ernest and the character "Old Karl" in ''The Green Hills of Africa'' is based on him. There is also a lot of Charles Thompson in the character Harry Morgan in the novel "To Have and Have Not." Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover books

Hemingway Ernest
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
New York: Chas. Scribner's Sons 1940. Cloth. Spine somewhat rubbed and darkened a bit tanned and a trifle shaken but a sound copy. Later printing of the first edition without the 'A'. Inscribed by Hemingway on the half- title: "To Max Showalter with all good wishes Ernest Hemingway." Accompanied by two other items: a another copy first printing bearing Max Showalter's ownership signature on the free endsheet endsheets darkened at gutters else very good in defective but largely complete dust jacket; and b Mary Hemingway's HOW IT WAS New York: Knopf 1976 first edition near fine in very good dust jacket inscribed by Mary Hemingway to Showalter in Los Angeles in the year of publication. Showalter a.k.a. Casey Adams enjoyed a long career in film and television and was a feature player at 20th Century Fox favored by Darryl Zanuck who required Showalter's assumption of the 'Adams' stage name. Though he was associated with a long list of films and television programs from the 1940s-1980s we find no record of his credited association with a film adaptation of Hemingway's work. He did however originate the role of Ward Cleaver the Beaver's old man which later passed to Hugh Beaumont. Chas. Scribner's Sons hardcover books

Green Hills of Africa
New York: Scribner's 1935. First edition. Fine. FIRST EDITION FIRST APPEARANCE of Hemingway's classic account of his 1933 African safari; this Scribner's magazine appearance precedes the first edition in book form. "Green Hills of Africa was written in Key West in 1934 mostly over a period of several months with interruptions for fishing expeditions in the Caribbean and another trip to Cuba. Published in October 25 1935 after serialization in Scribner's magazine it was indeed a book about landscape though Hemingway referred to it in more magical or mystical terms as 'country'.

"It is probably that this communication of the sense of place and the sense of the immediacy and palpability of the experience in that place is what gives the Green Hills of Africa its special distinction.

"But even more than country Green Hills of Africa is a book about writing and writers. As a writer he wanted to see 'how far prose can be carried if any one is serious enough and has luck' to see if prose could attain a fourth and even a fifth dimension." Mellow Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences; Baker Hemingway the Writer as Artist.

IN: Scribner's Magazine May - November 1935. New York: Scribner's 1935. Quarto original wrappers; custom box. Seven issues complete. Without any of the usual stamps or labels. An outstanding set - the finest we've seen. . Scribner's unknown books

Hemingway thought highly of Winchell in their early days and wrote that “Winchell is the greatest newspaperman that ever lived†and remarked that Winchell was the “only reporter who could last three rounds with the Zeitgeist.†Walter Winchell was at one time one of the most powerful individuals in America with his newspaper column syndicated in hundreds of newspapers and his role as radio commentator helping him to reach millions of people.
