Hardcover. lacking the original dust jacket but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing front hinge a little weak but not cracked some spotting to the front cover light dust-soiling to the top edge age-toning to fore-edge spine slightly faded paper spine label intact but worn and creased. 1930 republication of Hemingway's first story collection originally published as a short chapbook in 1924 and in a much-expanded edition under the same title in 1925. This edition identical in content to the 1925 edition with the exception of a new Introduction by Edmund Wilson was issued after Hemingway had risen to prominence on the strength of his novella "The Torrents of Spring" and his novels "The Sun Also Rises" and "A Farewell to Arms" all published between 1926 and 1929. Scribner's Hemingway's publisher since early 1926 bought the rights to this collection from its previous publisher Boni & Liveright and reissued it with a jacket design similar in style to those of the two novels all were designed by "Cleon". NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. . Paris: printed at the Three Mountains Press and for sale at Shakespeare & Company; London William Jackson 1924. The booze blood and brutality are all there" - Claude McKay's copy First edition the Harlem Renaissance poet and novelist Claude McKay's copy signed by him on the half-title. Hemingway's writing was a strong influence on McKay who was then living in Montparnasse in the same circle of Lost Generation literary expatriates. McKay lived the bohemian life in Paris supporting himself by posing nude in the city's art studios including for the Cubist painter Andre Lhote. He remembers in his 1937 memoir A Long Way from Home that he was given this copy of Hemingway's breakthrough collection by an American friend who read aloud from the book at the Dôme while McKay drank a double cognac. "My friend and host said 'They are talking in a big way about this Hemingway but I just can't get him. I like the young radical crowd and what they are aiming to do. But this thing here' - he pointed to in our time - 'I don't like it. It is too brutal and bloody. The only thing I admire about the book is the cover. That sure is in our time all right. If you like it you can have it.' My hand trembled to take it. The book was worth something between thirty and fifty francs which was more than I could afford. I have it still" pp. 249-50. The two writers met once on the Left Bank when they were briefly introduced by the publisher Max Eastman. In his memoir McKay confesses his "vast admiration" for Hemingway praising his clarity and honesty. "When Hemingway wrote The Sun Also Rises 1926 he shot a fist in the face of the false romantic-realists and said 'You can't fake about life like that'" p. 251. He read Hemingway devotedly. The Sun Also Rises looms large over McKay's Home to Harlem which likewise takes an existential war veteran named Jake as its protagonist and the title of his second memoir My Green Hills of Jamaica alludes to Green Hills of Africa. McKay traces the originality of Hemingway's writing back to this collection: "in our time contains the frame the background and the substance of all of Hemingway's later work. The hard-boilism - the booze blood and brutality are all there. Hemingway has taken this characteristic of American life from the streets the barrooms the ringsides and lifted it into the realm of literature. In accomplishing this he did revolutionary work with four-letter Anglo-Saxon words" p. 252. This is number 71 of 170 numbered copies offered for sale; another 130 imperfect copies were printed and sent as presentation and review copies. The American edition followed in 1925. Tall octavo. Woodcut portrait frontispiece of the author by Henry Strater. Printed on handmade paper watermarked with the publisher's device. Original buff boards lettered in black and printed in red with decorative newspaper collage edges uncut. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase and chemise. Shakespeare and Co. ticket to rear pastedown. Spine ends just slightly worn minor rubbing endpapers browned as usual. A well-preserved near-fine copy of this fragile book. <p>The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape London in 1926. 8vo. blue publisher's cloth lettered in white to the spine with Cape device to the foot; together in the rare printed wrapper unclipped '6s. net' to the front flap featuring lettering and decorative borders in blue; The BOOK is the second state blue cloth binding and is a Very Good example a little bumped and rubbed at edges with some minor fading to the spine ; light overall toning internally but clean overall with a couple of corner creases to a few pages; The WRAPPER toned to the folds and especially to the spine; rubbed and creased along folds with some small losses to the corners and spine. A couple of light splash marks to the upper panel; completely unrestored. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Hemingway's second published work and his first book to be published in Great Britain. Part of the 'Second Story' series. An early collection of 15 short stories with the prose bridge 'chapter' divisions and an 'L' Envoi'. Hemingway's writing career began while as a reporter for The Kansas City Star where he spent six months after graduating from High School. When the First World War broke out he enlisted in the Red Cross and later served as an ambulance driver on the Italian front. Hemingway struggled to readjust to life after the war. One of the stories included here 'Big Two-Hearted River' was based on a camping trip he took with some High-School friends and is semi-autobiographical describing the protagonist's attempts to readjust to life after the experiences of war. After marrying Hemingway moved to Paris and began to move within a circle of writers who referred to themselves as 'the lost generation' - Gertrude Stein Ezra Pound and James Joyce amongst other artists such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. He began to write travel pieces and had compiled a collection of short stories before the suitcase containing his manuscripts was lost by his wife at a train station at the Gare de Lyon. All that remained were two stories and Hemingway had to start again from scratch. 'in our time' was first produced in Paris in 1924 and in this early iteration the stories it contained were more like vignettes which had initially appeared in Ezra Pound's 'The Little Review' the previous year. Many were on the subject of war bullfighting grief and loss and of the small run of 300 copies only 170 survived due to the poor printing process. After it was printed he continued to write short stories and in 1925 after combining the vignettes with the new stories 'In Our Time' was reprinted in America. It now contained fourteen short stories with the vignettes interwoven as 'interchapters' many introducing his Nick Adams character closely modeled on himself for the first time. The book is now considered to be one of Hemingway's masterpieces and certainly established him as a writer of great promise. Until very recently this example has been housed in a private collection. A nice copy of the Noble Laureate author's second published work and very elusive indeed with the wrapper. More images available on request. The stories' themes – of alienation loss grief separation – continue the work Hemingway began with the vignettes which include descriptions of acts of war bullfighting and current events. The collection is known for its spare language and oblique depiction of emotion through a style known as Hemingway's "theory of omission" Iceberg Theory.
