A Farewell to Arms
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1929. First Edition First Printing. First edition first printing - first issue lacking the disclaimer. Measures approximately 7.5" x 5.25" 355 numbered pages. A brand new facsimile reproduction dust jacket is included for protection and display.

This book is in very good minus condition. Moderate wear and staining to the black cloth boards. Some paper loss to the gilt label on the spine. Previous owner's book plate on the front endpaper. Interior pages are clean.

Early in 1918 Ernest Hemingway joined the Italian Red Cross and served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. During his time abroad Hemingway had two experiences that affected him profoundly and that would later inspire one of his most celebrated novels A Farewell to Arms. The first occurred on July 8 1918 when a trench mortar shell struck him while he crouched beyond the front lines with three Italian soldiers. Though Hemingway embellished the story over the years it is certain that he was transferred to a hospital in Milan where he fell in love with a Red Cross nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Scholars are divided over Agnes' role in Hemingway's life and writing but there is little doubt that his relationship with her informed the relationship between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms. What unfolds is a story filled with romance intertwined with moments of bravery danger love and loss.

Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. Norwalk Ct: Easton Press 2003. Leather_bound. Fine. Full chocolate brown leather decorated and titled in gilt; hubbed spine; silk moire endpapers and marker ribbon all edges gilt. Limited to an unspecified number of copies for advance reservation subscribers only to the publisher's "100 Greatest Books Ever Written" An unused unread example. Hemingway's 1929 novel and his first best-seller of love and loss set during the Italian campaign of World War I. The novel explores the love affair between an American Frederic Henry serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps and and an English nurse Catherine Barclay. When Henry is wounded at the Italian front and sent to a hospital he requests Catherine whom he had briefly met earlier to be his nurse. They slowly fall in love and as Frederic recovers they spend the summer together. As Frederick is called back to the front Catherine tells him that she is three months pregnant. The Italian forces are forced to retreat at the Battle of Caporetto; Frederic narrowly escapes being executed for treason jumping into a river and then trekking across the plains in an effort to find Catherine to tell the rest of the story would be a spoiler. ERNEST HEMINGWAY
A FAREWELL TO ARMS

ERNEST HEMINGWAY. A FAREWELL TO ARMS. New York: Scribners 1929. First edition first printing in first state dust jacket. Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway to Gus Edwards. Book's cloth covers and gold labels are in fine condition. Internal pages are lightly toned; no foxing. Book's dust jacket is near fine plus to fine condition. Book dust jacket shows do wear or damage although it is lightly toned; "$2.50" original price still present on inner front flap. Hemingway inscription to Gus Edwards is bright and clean. It does not appear that Ernest Hemingway was a close friend of Gus Edwards simply because the inscription was written with his generic "all best wishes." It is presumed this Gus Edwards was the significant vaudeville music composer in the 1920s whose life served as the basis for the 1939 movie The Star Maker with Bing Crosby playing the lead role as Edwards. Edwards' career evolved from songwriter to theater owner Gus Edwards Music Hall in New York music publisher radio star and film director His "school days" reviews provided the career starts for Groucho Marx Eddie Cantor George Jessel Ray Bolger Phil Silvers Walter Winchell and many others. Some of Edwards' hit songs include: "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" "In My Merry Oldsmobile" "If I Were a Millionaire" "I'll Be With You When the Roses Bloom Again" and many more. He also began his Hollywood Revues in the late 1920s. According to Andre Hanneman's ERNEST HEMINGWAY: A Comprehensive Bibliography Princeton University Press 1967 the firsdt edition first printing of A FAREWELL TO ARMS was published September 27 1929. Thrity-one thousand and fifty copies were printed. Page 23 #8 It is not known if Hemingway inscribed this book for Edwards in person or an agent acquired it for Edwards. The original jacket is toned with the spine slightly dulled and there is creasing chipping and closed tears to the extremities particularly to the spine ends and tips. An uncommonly sharp book in the original jacket featuring the iconic design by Cleonike Damianakes.

"But after a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain."

Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms is a novel of love disillusionment and the quiet brutality of war drawn from his service in the Italian ambulance corps during World War I. Its spare restrained style became a hallmark of his work. Nowhere is this more evident than in the ending which he rewrote 47 times before settling on a version that simply reports what happened without commentary or consolation. That decision marked a break from the narrative conventions of the 19th century and helped define the tone of modernist fiction. The novel remains one of the most influential works of the twentieth century appearing on the Modern Library's list of the 100 best English-language novels Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels and The Guardian's "1000 Novels Everyone Must Read."

Inventory ID: 391 - 143 - 768
Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover
