Collier Richard; Ernest Hemingway
Fighting Words The Correspondents of World War II
New York: St. Martin's Press 1989. Fine condition in Near Fine dust jacket. Not a book club edition. Tiny remainder dot on bottom edge. Not price clipped 17.95. No owner's name or bookplate. Clean square tight unmarked copy. Sharp corners. Photo illustrated. From the Dust Jacket: "They were the correspondents who covered the most extensively reported war in all history: World War II. Intrepid men and women long on courage and short on introspection they were comparable to the fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain or the commander brigades of D-Day. Or were they - as some thought - egocentrics and incipient alcoholics with little regard for ethics or truth The reality lay somewhere in between. Ernest Hemingway Clare Hollingsworth Alan Moorehead and Richard Dimbleby were but a few of the reporters filing stories. By 1944 Eisenhower's press camp at the Hotel Scribe in Paris was dealing with one thousand correspondents who were filing over three million words a week plus 35000 photographs. When the reporters looked back the one word most often used to describe their experiences was 'dread.' 'Nearly always it was dread and nothing else' one correspondent recalled 'and the joy we had in leaving the Western Desert was so great it was like a physical pain.' But it was not all pain for there were times - in Stockholm Ankara and even initially in Moscow - when the war seemed far away. Himself a war correspondent for two years Richard Collier draws us into the dust and drama of a life as adventurous dangerous and addictive as any can be. It is a memorable book about one of the most colorful and talented groups of journalists in history. Published in London in 1989 under the title THE WARCOS: THE WAR CORRESPONDENTS OF WORLD WAR TWO. Bibliography. Index. First Printing of the First US Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. 8vo. 230pp. St. Martin's Press Hardcover
