This is a exceptional copy with only a slight nick at spine tail a partial small dog-ear at lower outer corner and a bit of rubbing at rear wrap. There is otherwise no creasing cracking chipping bumping soiling or other blemishes and is close to as-new condition. Clearly it was handled only very lightly. In this the premier issue of Esquire the author contributed his first of a series of "letters" that would continue through February 1939. This one is illustrated with 17 photographs of the author and second wife Pauline Pfeiffer fishing and landing marlin. One photo shows a young John Hemingway with a small marlin. From the opening paragraph "The rooms on the northeast corner of the Ambos Mundos hotel in Havana look out to the north over the old cathedral the entrance to the harbor and the sea and to the east to Casablanca peninsula the roofs of all house in between and the width of the harbor. If you sleep with your feet to the east this may be against the tenants of certain religions the sun coming up over the Casablanca side and into your open window will shine on your face and wake you no matter where you were the night before." Ernest Miller Hemingway 1899-1961 won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Among other work he published seven novels six short story collections and two non-fiction works; many of this works are considered classics of American Literature. Hemingway has become in the minds of many the "man's man" who loved to fight and considered mountaineering bullfighting and car racing the only "true" sports. Hemingway's life had far too many twists and turns to recount here; a brilliant and complicated man he has left a literary heritage of incredible depth; his biographer stated that "he left stories and novels so starkly moving that some have become part of our cultural heritage". <br /> <br /> This work "Men Without Women" was an immediate publishing success. Within two weeks of its release in 1927 with the title page dated 1927 7300 copies had sold; by the end of 1927 there were four separate printings that year each with the title page dated 1927 over 13000 copies had sold. The 1928 date on our title page was used for both the fifth and sixth printings; the seventh printing would not come out until 1932 n.b. this information from Grissom see "Citation" below. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Black cloth binding over boards gold paper labels mounted on the front and spine with letters and ruled borders in black top edge of text block appears to have originally been stained red now faded fore-edge uncut endpapers which match the dust jacket design title page with silhouetted bull in black circle; binding twelvemo size 7 5/8" by 5 1/4" pagination: i-xii 1-232. The dust jacket is unclipped and shows the original $2.00 price jacket design "D" per Grissom which was first used on a 1927 printing. <br /> <br /> ___CONDITION: Volume better than very good the binding clean the gold paper labels clean and without rubbing straight corners just beginning to rub a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; very light wear to the front joint light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine offsetting to the endpapers the front endpaper with a few miniscule specks. The unclipped dust jacket is good only; while complete there is overall edgewear including small loss at both the head and tail and small chips where the flaps meet the panels the spine is sunned and while the panels flaps and spine are all still attached the brittle paper has caused creasing where each piece meets the other. <br /> <br /> ___CITATION: Grissom no. Bill Bird was an American publisher best known for running the Three Mountains Press a small press that published many prominent modernists in the 1920s including Ezra Pound Ernest Hemingway James Joyce William Carlos Williams and Robert McAlmon with Ezra Pound serving as editor. Over a period of two and a half years he published 9 works. Concurrently he founded Consolidated Press Service and worked there as a journalist from 1920-1933 when he joined the New York Sun as chief foreign correspondent. Forced to flee France after the Nazi invasion he wrote articles warning of war. After WWII he moved to Tangier and was the editor of the Tangier Gazette.<br /> <br> <br /> <br> <br /> This title was among Bird's private collection having been carted by him from Paris where he stayed until 1940 to Spain Tangiers and finally back to Paris and by descent to the US. 1403221.
