Volume one of a twelve-volume set in a full calf prize-binding with gilt decoration to the spine boards and square and the gilt crest of King's School Bruton to the front board. With marbled end papers and edges. Binder's stamp of the Relfe Brothers to the verso of the front free end paper. Ink inscription to the first blank page by the Headmaster of King's School Bruton awarding this book as a prize in 1906. Volume one of a twelve-volume set containing the works of Heinrich Heine 1797-1856 a German writer who is considered the last poet of Romantic era. This volume includes 'Buch der Leider' Book of Songs and 'Poetische Nachlese' Poetic Gleanings with an introduction by Stephan Born which encompasses the biographical literary and historical aspects of the work. Undated dated through copies held at HathiTrust Library. In a full calf prize-binding. Externally in excellent condition apart from a little fading to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Originally published as a set of as twelve volumes in four books the present two books contain volumes four to nine of of Heinrich Heines completed works. An uncommon edition published by Heffe. The present two volumes include Heine's tragedies comedies and travel writing along with a discussion of the History of Religion and Philosophy in Germany an essay on the Romantic School and finally an in-depth discussion of the state of France. The nineteenth century German poet writer and literary critic is best known for his early lyric poetry. Heines' poetry was frequently set to music in the form of Lieder or art songs by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. In a brown quarter leather binding over patterned boards. Externally generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards particularly to the edges. Rubbed to the head of the spine with a little chip in the calf to the head of the earlier volume. Lightly rubbed to the joints and the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Aside from some light foxing to the front and rear of the volume pages are bright and clean throughout.
