Paris 1871. Hand-colored lithograph 13 1/2 x 9 inches matted to 19 x 14 inches. A few light spots of foxing in margin but image quite bright and clean; a few small scuffs to uniform. Very good plus. Plate from Jules Renard Draner's series of caricatures entitled TYPES MILITAIRES: GALERIE MILITAIRE DE TOUTES LES NATIONS published from 1862-71. Draner - which was his nom de plume - was a Belgian artist who settled in Paris. Though he undertook a career as a businessman he never lost his zeal for drawing and caricature and in the 1860s he undertook to satirize the world's zest for military pomp with a series of one hundred thirty-six color lithographs depicting various military uniforms from around the world including ten plates showing American uniforms. Though his drawings were executed with an eye toward entertainment and caricature each shows accurate military dress down to appropriate use of feathers and buttons. This image shows a portly artilleryman presumably a German settler in Missouri decked out in a blue uniform with red trims holding a plate in one hand and a fork in the other. He is in New Orleans as indicated by a poster behind him evidently as part of occupying troops during the Civil War. He directs a horrified look at the bits of red food on his plate and fork perhaps intended to be some sort of foreign or New Orleans delicacy. Quite nice and highly displayable. COLAS 891. Draner , anagramme de Renard , était un illustrateur d'origine Belge qui travailla pour tout les journaux de caricatures de la fin du 19e siècle.

Paris au Bureau de L'Eclipse 1871 Première édition. Complète. Chemise cartonnée avec dos en tissu. Une copie du titre a été collée sur la première page. A l'intérieur se trouvent le titre et 31 planches. (Complet). La reliure présente une perte à un coin, ainsi qu'une perte de tissu en surface au dos. L'illustration est un peu plus foncée. A l'intérieur, les 32 feuilles colorées à la main sont en très bon état. Il y a un petit assombrissement sur la feuille de titre, et une légère manipulation sur les bords des feuilles, mais l'ensemble est en très bon état. Paris au Bureau de L'Eclipse 1871 Première édition. Complète. Chemise cartonnée avec un double de la page de titre collé sur la première planche. Les planches avant et arrière sont détachées et il n'y a pas de dos. Un peu de frottement sur les bords et des taches sur la planche arrière. A l'intérieur se trouvent le titre et 31 planches. (Complet). La planche 12 montre un aérostier tentant de soulager le siège. Les illustrations sont un peu plus sombres. A l'intérieur, les 32 feuilles colorées à la main sont en très bon état. Il y a un peu de noircissement sur la feuille de titre, et une légère manipulation sur les bords des feuilles, mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. Le titre présente une déchirure et quelques petites entailles réparées avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. Caricatures de la vie à Paris pendant le siège de Paris en 1870/71. 340 par 255mm (13œ par 10 pouces).

Paris Dusacq et cie 1865 Bel exemplaire de cette lithographie coloriée à la main, extraite des Types militaires de Draner. Elle représente un membre de la garde civile belge, pêchant dans son uniforme, tenant un joli parapluie vert. La lithographie elle-même est propre et brillante, signée dans la plaque en bas à droite. La carte qui l'entoure est un peu assombrie, avec de légères rousseurs, quelques taches sur le bord supérieur et une petite usure des bords. Légère réparation sur un bord. L'image mesure 29 cm x 20 cm. La plaque mesure 44,5 cm x 31 cm.

Couverture et 31 planches en couleurs de sujets militaires humoristiques : Gardes Nationales, gardiens de la paix, éclaireurs Franchetti, Légion des Amis de la France, garde mobile, franc-tireur, pupille de la République, corps franc des chemins de Fer, ambulances, gendarmerie, chirurgiens, douaniers, aumoniers. Jules Renard dit DRANER est né à Liège en 1833. Il se fixa à Paris en 1861 et collabora à différents journaux satiriques : 'L'Eclipse, Paris comique, Le Monde comique.... Il succéda à Grévin au Journal Amusant et au Petit journal pour rire et à Cham au Monde illustré, à l'Illustration et l'Univers illustré. - Ses types militaires étaient particulièrement appréciés et offrent toujours un puissant intérêt pour les détails des costumes de l'époque. Rousseurs sur page de titre et dernier feuillet et en marge de 2 feuillets. Marges de quelques feuillets légèrement rongées sinon bon exemplaire. Fonds Français, après 1800 tome 7 page 73. Paris: Bureau De L'eclipse Colour lithographs loosely laid in a contemporary half morocco album lettered 'Souvenirs du Siege de Paris' in gilt to upper cover heavily worn with boards splitting from spine and weak. Comprising mainly of Draner's works making up his 'Au Bureau de l'Eclipse' portfolio n.d. c.1872 namely 'Souvenirs du Siege de Paris - La Defenseurs de la Capitale' complete with a title and thirty-one plates; his 'Paris Assiege' with plates one to twenty-four only of thirty-one - see Le Quillec 1498; and his 'Soldats de la Republique' with plates one to six and eight to twenty-four so twenty-three of thirty-one plates also included are a couple of steel engravings and a few modern newspaper cuttings about the Commune and with an incomplete copy of Cham and Daumier's 'Album du Siege' see Le Quillec 899 and 1290 described as "dessins du celebre" with twenty-one monochrome lithographs only of forty. Jules Renard 1833-1926 was a Belgian artist Draner being an anagram of Renard. Cham was the pseudonym of Amedee Charles Henry Comte de Noe; Honore Daumier 1808-1879 printmaker caricaturist painter and sculptor. For Draner's works Colas 894 892 and 893 and Lipperheide 3626 3625 and 2330 respectively. First Edition. Half Morocco and Cloth. Good. Illus. by Draner; Renard Jules. Folio.
