Contemporary marbled calf gilt spine with red and tan morocco lettering-pieces gilt. Some light wear at extremities; some mostly marginal and pale spotting. Provenance: Starrenstein bookplate; purchased from Biblion 1969. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION FIRST STATE before the plates were titled and with plate 54 misnumbered 62. The plates are of flowers fruits bulbs leaves etc. of flowering plants and trees some showing whole plants and others showing details sometimes cut to reveal anatomical details.�The book was issued in 1805 in both folio and quarto format. It is not surprising that this folio edition best reflects Redout�'s superb botanical art. John Ruskin was one of many admirers of the work and in 1878 wrote to his bookseller F. S. Ellis: "Please at once set your Paris agents to look out for all copies that come up at any sale of Rousseau's Botanique with coloured plates 1805 - and buy all they can get." Rousseau's letters on botany were written from 1771 to 1773 but were not published in his lifetime. They first appeared in his Oeuvres in 1782. Exiled amongst the natural beauties of Switzerland in 1763 or 1764 Rousseau developed his interest in botany and made various collections of plant specimens or herbaria. See Lawrence Redouteana 15. Dust jacket condition: fine and unclipped. This is a translation of the letters which Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote during his lifetime to his friends superbly illustrated by P. J. Redoute. Rousseau was a highly influential philosopher in his day but during the last years of his life he spent a great deal of his time on the study of botany a subject which had fascinated him throughout his life. He made a detailed study of every plant on the island of Saint Pierre on Lake Bienne in Switzerland and when he came to England as a guest of Richard Davenport at Wooton Hall he studied the flora of the surrounding countryside in detail. On his return to Paris Rousseau wrote his famous Lettres Elementaires sur la Botanique subsequently translated into several languages. After his death hese letters were published again but this time the artist P. J. Redoute was commissioned to illustrate the volume. It is this volume complete with Redoute's exquisitely delicate illustrations which is reproduced here. The letters have been translated by Kate Ottevanger an authority on 18th century French literature. A lovely copy of this fine book. Michael Joseph hardcover

El gusto por la horticultura y la jardiner�a no era nuevo tampoco esa sensibilidad rom�ntica que poco a poco habr�a de calar en el coraz�n del europeo y devolverle el gusto por los placeres del campo. La sexualidad de las plantas recientemente descubierta no era un asunto menor y el patronazgo de numerosos proyectos naturalistas por parte de pr�ncipes y nobles abr�a para la bot�nica un horizonte de expectativas inigualables. Hac�a falta no obstante un hombre que pusiera su genio al servicio del pueblo y Rousseau escribi� sus Cartas elementales con el �nimo de convertir el estudio de la bot�nica en un 'camino bordeado de flores'. Si el fil�sofo lo consigui� poco importa. Lo importante es que la publicaci�n de esta peque�a obra fue entonces y es todav�a hoy un ejemplo precioso de divulgaci�n en las postrimer�as del siglo de las luces. Ahora que la naturaleza aparece fr�gil a la mano del hombre debemos volver la vista a estas Cartas y leerlas con el deseo de recuperar la sensibilidad perdida. unknown
