London: 1781. In a Contemporary Morocco Binding Attributed To Derôme Le Jeune<br/><br/>DEROME Nicholas Denis aka Le Jeune binder; attributed to. ROUSSEAU Jean Baptiste. Œuvres de Rousseau. Nouvelle édition. London: 1781.<br/><br/>Two twelvemo volumes 4 5/8 x 2 13/16 inches; 118 x 72 mm. 4 252; 4 276 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait by Delvaux in Volume I. <br/><br/>Contents: Volume I "Odes sacrées" "Odes Liv. II-IV" and "Cantates allégoriques." Volume II "Epitres Liv. I-II" "Allégories Liv. I-II" "Epigrammes Liv. I-IV" and "Poésies diverses."<br/><br/>Contemporary full red morocco attributed to Derôme Le Jeune unsigned but with dentelles à l'oiseau characteristic of Derôme to volume two. Covers with gilt triple fillet border smooth spines decoratively tooled in gilt in panels with two olive green morocco gilt lettering labels board edges with single gilt fillet gilt dentelles à l'oiseau all edges gilt bright blue endpapers. The absolute bare minimum of rubbing to extremities. A wonderful copy.<br/><br/>"Derôme was born on October 1 1731 became a master binder on March 31 1761 and was elected one of the Gardes en Charge of the Community of the Master Binders and Guilders of the City and University of Paris on May 10 1773 at the same time as François Gaudreau binder to the dauphine. He died around the year 1788 i.e. 1790. the designs used by Derôme on his bindings are extremely graceful and rival those of Padeloup to which they have a strong resemblance. It is be true that he purchased the material and stamps of this binder at the sale of his effects after his death it explains to some extent the great similarity of the ornamentation employed by the two artists. Derôme executed many mosaic bindings but his great renown has been gained by his dentelles especially those in which he introduced a little bird with outstretched wings and which are in consequence termed dentelles à l'oiseau" Fletcher W.I. Bookbinding in France.<br/><br/>Marius Michel in La Reliure Française says that Derôme sought and found in the industries of his time the elements for new decoration and crowned his efforts with the dentelles to which he has given his name and which are distinguished from preceding ones by not being made up of the same tools in repetition but in combination thus affording more variety.<br/><br/>"Jean-Baptiste Rousseau April 6 1671- March 17 1741 was a French poet. He was born in Paris the son of a shoemaker and was well educated. As a young man he gained favour with Boileau who encouraged him to write. Rousseau began with the theatre for which he had no aptitude. A one-act comedy Le Café failed in 1694 and he was not much happier with a more ambitious play Le Flatteur 1696 or with the opera Venus et Adonis 1697. In 1700 he tried another comedy Le Capricieux which had the same fate. He then went with Tallard as an attaché to London and in days when literature still led to high position seemed likely to achieve success.<br/><br/>"His misfortunes began with a club squabble at the Café Laurent which was much frequented by literary men and where he indulged in lampoons on his companions. A shower of libellous and sometimes obscene verses was written by or attributed to him and at last he was turned out of the café. At the same time his poems as yet printed only singly or in manuscript acquired him a great reputation due to the dearth of genuine lyrical poetry between Jean Racine and André de Chénier. In 1701 he was made a member of the Académie des inscriptions; he was offered though he had not accepted profitable places in the revenue department; he had become a favourite of the libertine but influential côterie of the Temple; and in 1710 he presented himself as a candidate for the Académie française.<br/><br/>"Verses more offensive than ever were handed round and gossip maintained that Rousseau was their author. Legal proceedings of various kinds followed and Rousseau ascribed the lampoon to Joseph Saunin. In 1712 Rousseau was prosecuted for defamation of character and on his non-appearance in court was condemned to perpetual exile. He spent the rest of his life in foreign countries except for a clandestine visit to Paris in 1738; he refused to accept the permission to return which was offered him in 1716 because it was not accompanied by complete rehabilitation.<br/><br/>"Prince Eugène and then other persons of distinction took him under their protection during his exile and at Soleure he printed the first edition of his poetical works. He met Voltaire in Brussels in 1722. Voltaire's Le Pour et le contre is said to have shocked Rousseau who expressed his sentiments freely. At any rate the latter had thenceforward no fiercer enemy than Voltaire. His death elicited from Jean-Jacques Lefranc marquis de Pompignan an ode that was perhaps better than anything of Rousseau's own work. That work may be roughly divided into two sections. One consists of formal and partly sacred odes and cantatas of the stiffest character of which perhaps the Ode a la fortune is the most famous; the other of brief epigrams sometimes licentious and always or almost always ill-natured"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Baptiste_Rousseau. The Assemblée Nationale adopted the first constitution in September 1791 which was signed by the king on 14 September 1791 instituting the principal of sovereignty of the people and the separation of powers. Discours sur l'origine et les fondemens de l'inegalitÈ parmi les hommes
First Edition of Rousseau's Early Work on Equality ROUSSEAU Jean-Jacques. Discours sur l'origine et les fondemens de l'inegalitÈ parmi les hommes. Amsterdam: Chez Marc Michel Rey 1755. First original edition distinguishable from the counterfeit editions by the signatures on frontispiece and the spelling "Jaques" on p. lii. Small octavo 8 x 5 inches; 202 x 127 mm. lxx 2 262 2 errata pp. Title-page printed in red and black. Copper-engraved frontispiece signed by Dominique Sornique after Charles Dominique Joseph Eisen engraved vignette on title and head-piece on dedication page by Fokke. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Binding a bit tight. Internally very clean. Overall a very good copy. The frontispiece depicts a group of "civilized" men contemplating a man in Rousseau's state of nature the state of complete equality which was lost with the introduction of the trappings of civilization such as industry agriculture and property. Rousseau Jean Jacques
Julie ou La Nouvelle Heloise: Lettres de deux amans habitans d’une petite ville au pied des Alpes Julie or the New Heloise: Letters from two lovers living in a small town at the foot of the Alps.
Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey 1761. First edition of the first best-selling novel in history which made Jean-Jacques Rousseau the world's first celebrity author. Octavo six volumes bound in contemporary full calf gilt titles to the spine marbled edges marbled endpapers. An exceptional piece of literary history. A retelling of the legendary love affair between French nun Heloise d'Argenteuil and theologian Peter Abelard Rousseau's groundbreaking novel Julie or the New Heloise became an instant best-seller. Publishers could barely keep up with the high demand for copies of the story which evoked an unprecedentedly passionate response from readers particularly high-society women from whom Rousseau is known to have received thousands of love letters. Publishers capitalized on the unequivocally high demand for the novel by renting it to readers at a rate per day and even per hour. Due to its content the book was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum List of Prohibited Books deemed lascivious and anti-clerical by the Roman Catholic Church. Although it was presented as a novel the book exists as a philosophical treaty on autonomy and authenticity as moral values which Rousseau perhaps argued to be ethically superior to rational and commonly-held moral principles. Arthur Schopenhauer cited Julie or the New Heloise as one of the four greatest novels ever written along with Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and Cervantes' Don Quixote. Historian Robert Darnton has argued that Julie 'was perhaps the biggest best-seller of the century.' Marc-Michel Rey unknown books

ROUSSEAU Jean Jacques 1712 1778
Botanique . ornée de soixante-cinq planches imprimées en couleurs d'après les peintures de P. J. Redouté
Paris: L. E. Herhan for Delachaussie et Garnery 1805. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Folio 506 x 332 mm. Half-title. Title with stipple-engraved vignette 65 stipple-engraved plates by Bouquet Jacques Chailly Mlle. Delelo and others after Redouté printed in colors by Langlois. Contemporary marbled calf gilt spine with red and tan morocco lettering-pieces gilt. Some light wear at extremities; some mostly marginal and pale spotting. Provenance: Starrenstein bookplate; purchased from Biblion 1969. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION FIRST STATE before the plates were titled and with plate 54 misnumbered 62. The plates are of flowers fruits bulbs leaves etc. of flowering plants and trees some showing whole plants and others showing details sometimes cut to reveal anatomical details. The book was issued in 1805 in both folio and quarto format. It is not surprising that this folio edition best reflects Redouté's superb botanical art. John Ruskin was one of many admirers of the work and in 1878 wrote to his bookseller F. S. Ellis: "Please at once set your Paris agents to look out for all copies that come up at any sale of Rousseau's Botanique with coloured plates 1805 - and buy all they can get." Rousseau's letters on botany were written from 1771 to 1773 but were not published in his lifetime. They first appeared in his Oeuvres in 1782. Exiled amongst the natural beauties of Switzerland in 1763 or 1764 Rousseau developed his interest in botany and made various collections of plant specimens or herbaria. See Lawrence Redouteana 15. ROUSSEAU Jean Jacques 1712 1778
Lettres de deux amans habitans dune petite ville au pied des Alpes
Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey 1761. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 6 volumes in bound in 2 12mo 157 x 97mm. Vols. I: 407pp. II: 319pp. III: 255pp. IV: 331pp. V: 311pp. VI: 312pp. includes advertisements at end of Vol. I-III and IV without errata leaves. Half-title: Julie ou La nouvelle Héloise. Title pages printed in red and black with engraved ornaments. 12 full-page engraved plates illustrating the letters. Contemporary calf red edges; clean; calf slightly scuffed. First Edition. Rousseaus epistolary novel later known as Julie or the New Héloïse was first published in 1761 by Marc-Michel Rey in Amsterdam. The novels title translated Letters from two lovers living in a small town at the foot of the Alps is a nod to the history of Héloïse dArgenteuil and Pierre Abélard a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was initially put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. <br/><br/>Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel a philosophical theory about authenticity namely secret principles and feelings and being constituent of ones core identity permeated through it. Rousseau explored autonomy and authenticity as moral values and in turn created in Julie a story of temptation sin and redemption that was easily relatable. According to Historian Robert Darnton there were at least 70 editions in print before 1800. So immensely popular publishers could not print copies fast enough so they rented the book out by the day and even by the hour. The work stirred a strong emotional response from readers and had raised Rousseau to prominence as an author. Worldcat locates 6 copies of this edition in North America.
