Rousseau's Confessions is often regarded as the first modern autobiography covering the first fifty-three years of his life from his birth in Geneva in 1712 up to 1765. He set out to give a candid psychologically probing self-portrait recounting childhood apprenticeships love affairs friendships and humiliating episodes including the infamous story of falsely accusing a servant girl of stealing a ribbon and his abandonment of his children to a foundling hospital. The book is frequently compared to and partly modeled on Saint Augustine's Confessions but in a secular Enlightenment key using personal experience to explore themes of authenticity self-love moral responsibility and the corrupting effects of society. It is divided into twelve books moving from early family history through his years as a servant musician and writer and into the period when his controversial works made him a public lightning rod. The English text is by the translator A. S. B. Glover whose version has been widely used in twentieth-century English-language printings.
