Annotazioni di mano antica al verso della prima c. bianca. Qualche minima fioritura. Ottimo esemplare. Prima edizione, molto rara e pubblicata in veste anonima, di questa refutazione compiuta dal barnabita savoiardo delle dottrine pedagogiche e generalmente filosofiche di Rousseau. L'acume e la sottigliezza delle argomentazioni sfoggiate dal Gerdil valsero all'opera (edita in seguito con il nome di "Anti-Emile") la considerazione dello stesso Rousseau, che dichiarò senza mezzi termini: "Voilà l'unique écrit publié contre moi que j'ai trouvé digne d'être lu en entier". Giacinto Sigismondo Gerdil (Samoens, Savoia, 1718-Roma, 1802), barnabita, professore di filosofia in varie università italiane, amico del cardinale Lambertini e di Benedetto XIV nonché precettore del futuro re Carlo Emanuele IV, fu creato cardinale da Pio VI. Il suo nome è legato soprattutto all'attività di pedagogista. In filosofia fu seguace, senza troppa originalità, di Locke e di Malebranche e rispecchiò in modo eloquente il disagio che incontrò lo spiritualismo dinanzi al razionalismo dell'Encyclopédie e dei Lumi, mentre il suo pensiero politico, eminentemente lockiano, fu pervaso da una costante polemica con Hobbes e con il contrattualismo di Rousseau, da lui reputato pericoloso sovvertitore dell'ordine sociale (lo stesso Rousseau, peraltro, apprezzò molte delle critiche del Gerdil, di cui riconobbe la finezza speculativa). Rousseau è un fenomeno storico, umano, culturale che può essere analizzato anche per sé, con diverse prospettive, e il suo pensiero è vario e complesso, coinvolgendo tematiche di filosofia generale, di filosofia politica, di psicologia sociale, di sociologia ante litteram. La presente ricerca, curata da un giurista di professione, vuole analizzare i contenuti del suo pensiero politico e istituzionale, sovente frainteso, avvalendosi di ogni strumento utile, testuale e sistematico, oltre che di elementi di contesto storico, sociale, economico e di storia personale, utilizzati in questa precisa prospettiva. Si tratta di un pensiero combattente, di latente radicalità che, sulla scia di una vita indiscutibilmente tempestosa e sofferta, ci consegna, infine, al di là di apparenti contraddizioni, un messaggio coerente che, pur radicato in un contesto di partenza qualche volta limitante ma sempre suggestivo e utile a illuminarlo, si proietta nel tempo attuale e nel futuro. Si parla di eguaglianza, democrazia, forze interne ed esterne che la ostacolano, federalismo, condizioni di una pace universale, di impegno civile, interazione sociale e anche di libertà. Octavo six volumes bound in contemporary full calf gilt titles to the spine marbled edges marbled endpapers. An exceptional piece of literary history. A retelling of the legendary love affair between French nun Heloise d'Argenteuil and theologian Peter Abelard Rousseau's groundbreaking novel Julie or the New Heloise became an instant best-seller. Publishers could barely keep up with the high demand for copies of the story which evoked an unprecedentedly passionate response from readers particularly high-society women from whom Rousseau is known to have received thousands of love letters. Publishers capitalized on the unequivocally high demand for the novel by renting it to readers at a rate per day and even per hour. Due to its content the book was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum List of Prohibited Books deemed lascivious and anti-clerical by the Roman Catholic Church. Although it was presented as a novel the book exists as a philosophical treaty on autonomy and authenticity as moral values which Rousseau perhaps argued to be ethically superior to rational and commonly-held moral principles. Arthur Schopenhauer cited Julie or the New Heloise as one of the four greatest novels ever written along with Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and Cervantes' Don Quixote.
