An additional title page dated 1788 titled "Thirty-Eight Plates with Explanations. This set of plates was intended to illustrate Linnaeus's System of Vegetables and Particularly Adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany in the University of Cambridge". All hand-colored plates present and one folding table. These plates by F.P. Nodder were not included with the first or second editions. They were later published to be added to the those editions and subsequent editions making them the first edition of plates with text. Bound together in a handsome 20th century 1/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards with vellum corners raised bands spine lettered in gilt. Aux Deux-Ponts: Chez Sanson et Compagnie 1782. Respectively 306 255 406p. hardbound in matching quarter-calf over 6.5x4 inch boards: five thick raised bands title labels gilt devices and rulings gilt all edges tinted red marbled pastel endsheets. Only the first-mentioned volume is in relatively good shape it is edgeworn with card showing on all extremities and badly rubbed with several small defects otherwise quite sound and free of any ownership or other markings. Second-mentioned has a scortched head with tearing of leather and headband; the inch-long and unsightly "scortch" effect may be discoloration from heavily-applied glue meant to fix the tear; spine is now tight-back to textblock and expect a cracked front hinge. Third-mentioned is in condition similar to first but a full half-inch of lower spine is torn away rim and all exposing the text block. Text-blocks are tight and really very good case-bindings are as is with all faults. Chez Sanson et Compagnie unknown books

Title with stipple-engraved vignette 65 stipple-engraved plates by Bouquet Jacques Chailly Mlle. Delelo and others after Redouté printed in colors by Langlois. Contemporary marbled calf gilt spine with red and tan morocco lettering-pieces gilt. Some light wear at extremities; some mostly marginal and pale spotting. Provenance: Starrenstein bookplate; purchased from Biblion 1969. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION FIRST STATE before the plates were titled and with plate 54 misnumbered 62. The plates are of flowers fruits bulbs leaves etc. of flowering plants and trees some showing whole plants and others showing details sometimes cut to reveal anatomical details. The book was issued in 1805 in both folio and quarto format. It is not surprising that this folio edition best reflects Redouté's superb botanical art. John Ruskin was one of many admirers of the work and in 1878 wrote to his bookseller F. S. Ellis: "Please at once set your Paris agents to look out for all copies that come up at any sale of Rousseau's Botanique with coloured plates 1805 - and buy all they can get." Rousseau's letters on botany were written from 1771 to 1773 but were not published in his lifetime. They first appeared in his Oeuvres in 1782. Exiled amongst the natural beauties of Switzerland in 1763 or 1764 Rousseau developed his interest in botany and made various collections of plant specimens or herbaria. See Lawrence Redouteana 15. Printer's device to t.p. 12mo. 17 cm x 10 cm. <br/><br/>Rousseau a "Genevan philosopher writer and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political sociological and educational thought." Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie ou la nouvelle Héloïse was first published 1761 … and this the first translation into English was published in the very same year. "The novel's subtitle points to the history of 'Héloïse d’Argenteuil and Peter Abelard' a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel a philosophical theory about authenticity permeates through it as he explores autonomy and authenticity as moral values. A common interpretation is that Rousseau valued the ethics of authenticity over rational moral principles as he illlustrates the principle that one should do what is imposed upon him by society only insofar as it would seem congruent with one's 'secret principles' and feelings being constituent of one's core identity. One of Rousseau's earlier works the Discourse is a critique of conventional and social relations and a strong defense of the individual. With its emphasis on the equality of all it foreshadows his later work the Contrat Social which became the bible of the French Revolution. The frontispiece depicts a group of "civilized" men contemplating a man in Rousseau's state of nature the state of complete equality which was lost with the introduction of the trappings of civilization such as industry agriculture and property. Rousseaus epistolary novel later known as Julie or the New Héloïse was first published in 1761 by Marc-Michel Rey in Amsterdam. The novels title translated Letters from two lovers living in a small town at the foot of the Alps is a nod to the history of Héloïse dArgenteuil and Pierre Abélard a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was initially put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. <br/><br/>Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel a philosophical theory about authenticity namely secret principles and feelings and being constituent of ones core identity permeated through it. Rousseau explored autonomy and authenticity as moral values and in turn created in Julie a story of temptation sin and redemption that was easily relatable. According to Historian Robert Darnton there were at least 70 editions in print before 1800. So immensely popular publishers could not print copies fast enough so they rented the book out by the day and even by the hour. The work stirred a strong emotional response from readers and had raised Rousseau to prominence as an author. Worldcat locates 6 copies of this edition in North America.
