‎Annapolis MD: U.S. Naval Institute 1927. Third Edition. fair to good. 691 illus. figures tables index photos pasted inside fr bd & flyleaf ink notes inside fr bd & flyleaf bd & spine edges worn. The First Edition of this manual was published in 1920 and the Second Edition in 1922. Topics covered include football baseball crew track swimming wrestling lacrosse fencing gymnastics tennis leadership posture athletics and physical training. Pasted inside the boards are photographs of Midshipman F. E. Fleck who went on to a successful Naval career. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941 the USS Henley was moored in Bast Loch with battle stations manned a green sailor having sounded General Quarters instead of Quarters for Muster. This fortunate mistake gave the Henley under the command of Lieutenant Francis E. Fleck Jr. the opportunity to fire the first destroyer shots asthe initial wave of enemy planes swooped in. The Henley's gunners shot downone dive bomber with her.50 cal. guns and shared credit for another. Commanded by a junior lieutenant--both her commanding officer and executiveofficer were ashore when the attack began--the Henley dropped depth chargeson a sonar contact possibly a midget submarine outside the harbor and continued to blaze away at the enemy with her guns. Fleck with the rank ofCaptain later commanded the USS Salamonie an oiler in the mid-1950's. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy class of 1934 he retired with the flagrank of Rear Admiral. His decorations included the Naval Commendation Medal a Presidential Unit Citation a Bronze Star during the WWII invasion of Italy and a Silver Star during the WWII invasion of France. He died of cancer in 1990 in Waynesboro Pennsylvania. U.S. Naval Institute hardcover‎

‎Ohio 1840. Otherwise very good condition. Letter from John H. Richardson to Davidson W. Hedges heir to a particular property sharing information that a person named James Sloan had taken possession of a property that belonged to David Hedges now deceased.<br /> <br /> Richardson states that James Sloan and family has taken possession and is working a property "on the East half of Section 35 Town 13 Range 16 of the Ohio Purchase Company."<br /> <br /> "This half section.is the most valuable portion of land in those parts. because of its contiguity to the Town of Logan a fast growing Town being the County seat for Hocking county being distant only one mile.from the Town. and found on this section one of the Richest. Coal Mines.Thirdly the timber is equally valuable. Sugar Maple and Poplar to say nothing of the oak which cannot be excelled by any in the Western Country."<br /> <br /> "James Sloan and family for nearly two years.has been working this coal mine supplying Logan and other parts with coal.and timber. has been cut down without measure to supply Fishey Brick Kiln and all the stores and taverns in Logan."<br /> <br /> Richardson explains that Mr. Putnam of Marietta who paid the taxes for this property "would be willing to do anything in his power to save the property.but he has no legal authority."
