Petits manques parfois comblés et restaurés en marges des plats. Envoi autographe signé de Victor Hugo : ""Aux pieds de madame d'Alton-Shée."" Précieux exemplaire de présent dans sa condition d'origine. Victor Hugo n'est pas avare de compliments envers les femmes mais l'expression « aux pieds de Ma Dame » est réservée aux premiers exemplaires offerts à chaque parution à Juliette Drouet. « Aux pieds de Madame » en un seul mot hommage en apparence plus sobre est en réalité toujours adressé à des femmes dont le poète est épris comme par exemple Léonie d'Aunet pour laquelle il enrichit ses exemplaires de la même dédicace intime. C'est pourtant ici à une femme mariée de trente ans sa cadette que l'écrivain dédicace ce recueil de poèmes sur la guerre de 1871. Son mari le Comte Edmond d'Alton-Shee est d'ailleurs un ami de longue date de Victor Hugo pair de France comme lui et partageant les mêmes combats démocratiques. Ils tentèrent justement tous deux de prévenir la catastrophe de 1871 comme en témoigne cette lettre que lui adresse Hugo le 2 aout 1870 : « Je suis absolument d'accord avec vous. Il faudra saisir le joint. À un moment donné la civilisation ayant pour verbe la révolution doit mettre le holà. Je désire le Rhin pour la France . Mais rien par Bonaparte ! rien par cette affreuse guerre ! Nous sommes d'accord. ». Ce n'est pourtant pas à ce frère d'arme et de plume que Victor Hugo offre cet exemplaire mais à son épouse la jeune Valentine dont la grande beauté fut immortalisée par un autre ami de la famille le peintre Paul Chenavard qui fut également son amant. C'est en septembre 1872 au moment de la parution de l'Année terrible que le cÂœur du poète vieillissant cède aux attraits de la trop séduisante épouse dont le mari à présent presque aveugle ne peut sans doute plus apprécier les charmes. Le couple rend en effet visite à Victor Hugo à Guernesey et logent dans un hôtel « en face de Hauteville-House . où ils ont deux chambres pour 20 francs par semaine. » « Ils sont chez moi toute la journée déjeunent et dînent chez moi et n'ont que la rue à enjamber. » lettre à Judith Mendès 10 septembre1872 Cette proximité avec l'envoûtante dame inspire à Hugo un long poème nostalgique qu'il compose le 5 septembre mais qu'il ne publiera que onze ans plus tard après la mort d'Edmond dans Toute la Lyre. Il faut lire entre les lignes de son poème « A Madame d'A-sh. » pour deviner les relations qu'entretint alors le poète avec cette muse : « . Noble femme aux vaincus fidèle votre sourire frais et beau quand il luit sur moi me rappelle cette aurore sur ce tombeau » Cependant l'intime dédicace manuscrite dont il l'honore sur son recueil de poèmes témoigne d'une passion qui ne s'atténuera pas avec le temps puisqu'après son retour en France c'est avec le même feu qu'il l'invite à lui rendre visite : « Avez-vous trouvé mon nom à votre porte madame Mon nom venait se jeter à vos pieds et vous demander une grâce. Soyez assez bonne pour venir dîner . je serai bien heureux de me mettre à vos pieds » lettre à Valentine D'Alton-shee 1er aout 1873   Exceptionnelle dédicace manuscrite et secrète déclaration d'un poète amoureux de la beauté des femmes.  Michel Lévy frères unknown‎
