Singele sheet 18.0 x 13.2 cm printed on one side printed image 15.3 x 11.0 cm. = Portrait of the famous Dutch lawyer and politician Hugo De Groot or Grotius 1683-1645. This is an original handmade print from a woodcut by the artist Joannes Petrus Josephus "Jan" Franken Pzn. 1896-1977 a versatile artist whose works are found in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Singer Museum in Laren. This print is numbered 39 of a limited edition of 50. Signed and dated by Franken in pencil. Printed on very thin almost ephemeral paper. Rare. See also J. Schwencke: Houtsneden van J. Leiden Lugduni Batavorum ex officina Iohannes Maire 1630 small octavo 11.5x6 cm full parchment binding with yap edges engraved title page and faded handwritten title on spine blue coloured edges handsewn headbands intact closure ribbons are lost but it is visible where they used to be 51417 pp. there is an error in the pagenumbers where 389 follows 380 but there is no loss of text beautifully bound and still in good condition. With a handwritten note on the titlepage: "Castrensis Dono D. Balth. Moreti". The book was gifted by Balthasar Moretus 1574-1641. He was a Flemish printer and head of the Officina Plantiniana the printing company established by his grandfather Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in 1555. The title translates as Annals and History of the Low Countries' War which refers to what is now known as The Eighty Years' War or the Dutch War of Independence 1568-1648 though the conflict involved seventeen provinces and their revolt against Philip II of Spain sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands. These would later become the nations of the Netherlands Belgium and Luxembourg. Sabin quotes F. Muller in stating that this work is "important for the history of the events which impeded the execution of Usselincx's plan to form the East- and West-India Companies from 1591--1609." Grotius wrote the manuscript in 1612-13 covering the period of the war through the Twelve Years' Truce and it was first published in Amsterdam in 1657. He was a Dutch humanist best known for his influence on international law specifically his works 'On the Law of War and Peace' and 'The Free Seas' and the concept of human rights. Of all his numerous works this will always be considered Grotius' magnum opus the work upon which his reputation most solidly rests. It earned him the designation as the "father of international law." The two principal topics treated are the legal obligations of human societies including those that have sovereign power and the procedure for enforcing such duties and punishing violations of law. Written between 1604 and 1605 De Jure Praedae On the Law of Prize which remained in manuscript until 1868 is the earliest significant legal work by Hugo Grotius 1583-1645. His discussion of prize is not restricted to issues of legality; he seeks to determine also whether the capture of enemy material is honorable or expedient. He pursues these issues through an elegant argument based on natural law. Remarkable for its intellectual finesse and literary quality De Jure Praedae is equally significant as the source of two of his most important writings. Mare Liberum 1609 is based on one of its chapters. It also contains an early version of De Jure Belli et Pacis 1625. In this regard the book offers a valuable introduction to the issues explored in these later works.
