‎Hofmannsthal Hugo von and Marie Under translator‎

‎Elektra: tragöödia ühes vaatuses a tragedy in one act‎

‎Tallinn: Teatrikirjastus Tavet Mutsu 1924. Octavo 19 × 11.5 cm. Original pictorial paper-covered boards with a design by Peet Aren and executed by the studio of Ed. Taska; 103 pp. Boards lightly scuffed; small stain to lower front board; upper spine torn; internally very good. First Estonian edition of Hofmannsthal's 1903 psychological drama based on Sophocles translated by Marie Under the Estonian poet and organizer of the modernist "Siuru" group. With numerous photographs of the play's performance in Tallinn showing the striking expressionistic set design taken by the well-known photographer Parikas. The cover features a strong design by Peet Aren 1889-1970 a prominent member of the Tartu school of visual arts in the 1920s whose prolific work as a graphic designer and painter was influenced by German Expressionism and Constructivism. The present design combines elements of both alluding both to the play's Greek setting and to modernity through a dynamic arrangement of intersecting flashes of lightning or electricity. Aren may have been responsible for the set design as well which is executed in a similar style. Boards printed in black green and gold by the studio of Eduard Taska the famous Estonian bookbinder and leatherworker. Not in KVK OCLC. hardcover books‎

‎WOLF Hugo 1860 1903‎

‎Autograph letter signed in full to arts administrator Richard Sternfeld‎

‎3 pp. of a bifolium. 8vo 175 x 110 mm. Dated Döbling now part of Vienna November 4 1892. In black ink. In German with translation.

Wolf asks Sternfeld who is not named in the letter but may be identified by circumstantial evidence about the "popular concerts" series in Berlin which Sternfeld had suggested as a venue for showcasing Wolf's music. He doubts whether the setting of these concerts was suited to the purpose:

"Would you please most esteemed Sir be so kind as to reveal to me the character of the so-called popular concerts in Berlin. Are your popular concerts such at which the audience is eating drinking and smoking Of course such concerts would prohibit the performance of vocal music and when you proposed a popular concert to me you intended to perform my instrumental works only. In such a case a popular concert would not serve me well because as you know my specialty is vocal music. However should it be otherwise and should the said concerts also include vocal music then I would of course prefer such a popular concert to one at the Singakademie if only to save money. It also would appear that these popular concerts are held in the hall of the Philharmonic which should not be underestimated."

Creased at horizontal fold; short split to lower portion of central fold. "Wolf intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances tonal form melodic design vocal declamation pianistic texture the relationship of voice to piano etc. Seeking an art 'written with blood' he went below the surface of poetry - even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's - in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity written as he once proclaimed for epicures not amateurs." Eric Sams and Susan Youens in Grove Music Online.

Richard Sternfeld 1858-1924 was a prominent arts administrator in Berlin at the time. A board member of the Wagner-Verein he organized several performances of Wolf's works.

The Berlin concert Wolf was planning at the time finally took place on January 8 1894 - but not as a "popular" concert. Siegfried Ochs director of the Philharmonischer Chor conducted some of Wolf's choral-orchestral works. unknown books‎

‎Internationales Kaiser-Jubilaums-Schachturnier Wien 1898‎

‎xix351 pages with diagrams and table. Quarto 10 1/4" x 7 1/4" bound in brown cloth with brown lettering to spine and original wrapper cover tipped to front cover. Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5250 First edition.

1898 was highlighted by the great Imperial Jubilee Tournament organized to commemorate the 50 year reign of Emperor Franz Josef I and to mark the 25th anniversary of the first international chess tournament held in Vienna. Led by the example of Baron von Rothschild wealthy members of the newly formed Vienna Chess Club contributed funds to assure the success of the huge competition. Most of the Word's chess elite Lasker and Charousek did not participate representing the United States England France Germany Hungary Russia and host nation Austria were on hand in the lovely "Kaiserstadt" to participate in this long strenuous test of chess skills. The Spartan playing schedule called for five games per week Monday Tuesday Wednesday Friday and Saturday; Thursday was reserved for adjourned games and Sunday a day of rest. A number of the participants complained about the very short rest period. Eleven of them went so far as to draw up a written petition requesting a longer break on the grounds that the continued strain could endanger their health. The tournament committee found itself unable to act when Pillsbury protested the action. Ironically the American master would be close to physical exhaustion in the closing rounds of his head-to-head duel with Tarrasch who was nearly 11 years older. Even greater expenditures of time and energy would have been required had not the veteran A Schwarz. co-winner of the Wiesbaden and Graz tournaments of 1880 abandoned the struggle in the eighth round - following which his games were struck from the table. Tarrasch 21 -2 =13 and Pillsbury 24 -5 =7 finished in an historic first-place tie 27 1/2 points. They were trailed by Janowski 22 -7 =7 with 25 1/2 Steinitz 18 -7 =11 with 23 1/2 and Schlechter once again the youngest participant with 21 1/2 points. Tarrasch's triumph gave convincing proof that the great pedagogue's art had not ended with his disappointing showing at Budapest two years earlier. Finishing in a tie with Pillsbury after 36 grueling rouds the German physician proceeded to defeat his younger American rival in a tense four-game playoff 1 -0 =1. Tarrasch received 6000 kroner for his effort - while the exhausted younger man found solace in his prize of 4000 kroner and undiminished admiration of the Viennese chess community. ‎Lucani M. Annaei Lucan or Lucanus ; commentary by Hugo Grotius and Thomas Farnaby‎

‎Pharsalia. Sive De Bello Civili Casaris et Pompeii translated: On the Civil War Between Caesar and Pompey‎

‎Amsterdam: Apud Janssonio Waesbergios 1681. Full Calf. Very Good. 330 6 pp. 12mo with copper engraved title page by Giovanni Van Den Avele. Pharsalia is considered a masterpiece and possibly the masterpiece of the Silver Age of Ancient Roman poetry. The epic poem concerns the Roman Civil War at the time of Caesar and most particularly the extended struggle between Caesar and Pompey the Great. Lucanus writing a century later during the reign of Nero far from glamorizing the warfare took a jaundiced view of the fraticidal battle and his portrait of both Caesar and Pompey was far from flattering. His "epic poem" therefore is epic in terms of length scope and ambition not in its portrayal of the principals. Because of the subject matter the popularity of "Pharsalia" has crested at times when a society still steeped in the Classical canon of literature descended into civil strife when the themes and point-of-view of Lucanus really resonated. Never was this more the case than in the seventeenth century when this copy was printed. First there was the final emergence of the Netherlands from under the yoke of Habsburg rule and then there was the English Civil War just to mention two instances both highly germane to the edition at hand. Thus the notes by Grotius and Modern calf with a black spine label and marbled endpapers. The work is incomplete and breaks off during the tenth book which Lucanus was still working on when he was forced to commit suicide. The binding is tight. Some leaves with more toning than others but overall quite clean. There are leaves in which the margins are parlously tight or the header is even close to being partially cut-off -- this is the upshot of the compact size of the copy and was the way the copy was issued over three centuries ago. This particular edition is not mentioned in Brunet.

Apud Janssonio Waesbergios unknown books‎
