Hugo Grotius is considered by some 'the father of international law'. However it was this work of theology that enjoyed the greatest popularity within his own lifetime. This is the first edition thus witha prefaceby Joannes Clericus the Swiss Theologian and biblical scholar. This was the personal copy of F. J. Cornish-Bowden of Black Hall in Devon who's stamp is found to the front pastedown. Condition: In full calf. Externally still sound with some general rubbing. The spine shows marks of handling and the gilt detailing is somewhat eroded. There is a personal ink stamp to the front pastedown and ink notations to the rear pastedown. The hinges are tender but still reasonably firm. Internally there arefurther occasional ink notations. Otherwise reasonably clean and bright throughout with just a little foxing to the first and last few pages as normal. Missing a full title page. Firmly bound. Overall: GOOD ONLY. Of all his numerous works this will always be considered Grotius' magnum opus the work upon which his reputation most solidly rests. It earned him the designation as the "father of international law." The two principal topics treated are the legal obligations of human societies including those that have sovereign power and the procedure for enforcing such duties and punishing violations of law.
