Portfolio of original photographs mainly from 210 x 300 mm. to 240 x 330 mm. depicting artillery field guns howitzers cannons ammunition wagons etc. produced by Friedrich Krupp. 53 mounted photographs some partly faded on 51 stiff boards 640 x 480 mm. all boards signed "Photogr. Atelier des Krupp'schen Etablissements." Large oblong folio 645 x 500 mm. orig. red cloth folder a little rubbed & soiled with title printed in gilt on cover metal protectors at corners. Essen: dated 1869-76. A very rare portfolio issued by the Krupp Steel Works with 53 original albumen photographs. A sort of trade catalogue showing the different cannons other weapons and military equipment manufactured by Krupp it was created for clients who were considering purchasing these products for their government or army. This album comes from the family collection of Otto von Bismarck chancellor and unifier of Germany and was presented to him by Krupp presentation slip laid-in. Alfred Krupp proved to be exceptionally progressive in his use of the art of photography. Employing this medium he persuasively presented the complexity of his huge enterprise to a wide public. The photographs were made to impress his far-flung clientele of "States Governors and Khans." Krupp had his publicity team assemble portfolios of relevant photographs depicting the tools of war and sent them to possible clients. This set is such an example: a miscellany of images selected to demonstrate to Bismarck the wide range of products manufactured by Krupp. "In 1861 one of the most remarkable figures in German industrial history Alfred Krupp commissioned his far relative Hugo van Werden 1836-1911 to learn photography in a studio in Hannover then well-known for its qualities in depicting industrial products. After a short apprenticeship van Werden set up the Krupp photographic and lithographic institute which from then on had to deliver all visual materials used for documentation press releases and public relations for Krupp's steel company. As early as 1862 on the occasion of the London World Fair Krupp was able to show and deliver large quantities of photographs of all his products and the company gained fame for the use of the new medium in advertising."-Rolf Sachsse in Encyclopedia of 19th-Century Photography p. 584. Includes an opening essay by Hugo Hiriart in English and Spanish an essay by Robert Morgan in English and Spanish and a brief narrative by the artist about her work English only. An array of paintings and sculpture in various media. The catalogue is inscribed to a former NY city gallery owner and signed by Marcia. A very scarce catalogue. "Marcia Marx 1931-2005 was an American artist. Born in Newark New Jersey she attended Yale School of Art and Columbia University. After completing her studies Marcia Marx moved to Mexico City where she lived for more than ten years and received much of her inspiration. Marx frequently painted "Felliniesque characters and impressions" in her works often using modernist techniques. "Blue Figures In The Studio" is one such example. As a "visual satirist" Marcia Marx's works paintings and sculptures showed a sense of the ridiculous and an eye for the bizarre and comedic elements in the human experience. Marx's works clearly reflected her strong mastery of medium and message. As an artist Marcia Marx was versatile with an assortment of media ranging from paints to clay and left the "storytelling" and interpretation to the public - "No matter what I was thinking when I created it the viewer writes his or her own script making it a far more intriguing experience" the artist once stated. She was the first woman to have a one-person show at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes which Time magazine called a "smash hit". She was also one of six artists featured Cosmopolitan's article "Women Artists Today" which also included Georgia O'Keeffe and Louise Nevelson. Prior to her death on May 3 2005 in New York City after a two-year battle with cancer Marcia Marx participated in two major exhibitions. A highly successful retrospective of her art was held at the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York in 2002 which was documented by a well-written color catalog and her works were featured in a one-person show "An Interpretation of the Holocaust" at the Houston Holocaust Museum from October 2004-January 2005. When it was confirmed that Marcia Marx's works would be exhibited at the Houston Holocaust Museum the museum's executive director Susan Llanes-Myers exclaimed "We are so pleased to have Marcia Marx's art at out museum. Her work strikingly portrays a sense of remembrance a core of our mission." Art critic Donald Kuspit an art critic concurred stating that her works "have a disturbing poignancy not only because of their imagery but because of their intense physicality. Remembrance is Marx's theme. Her works are saturated in memory. unsettling as well as consoling." During her career Marcia Marx worked in Mexico City Israel Paris Rome and New York City. Superbly bound by the Monastery Hill Bindery unsigned but documented per below and through descent provenance in full maroon crushed morocco with rectilinear design motif shields stylized bird etc on both covers wide inner dentelles with elaborate gilt ruling. The book has been personally assembled by Ernst Hertzberg the original founder and principal first binder of the firm in 1902 of the Monastery Hill Binder. From "Exhibit of Bookbinding" St. Louis Ringer & Hertzberg 1904 this important documentation explaining the incredible origination of this extra-illustrated volume: "This work was especially gotten up by Ernst Hertzberg for the Universal Exposition of 1904 to show the art of Bookbinding in this line in America. Provenance: Through descent through Hertzberg family and Monastery Hill Bindery. Extra-Illustrated with "many Copper and Steel Plates Etchings and Photogravures extended into two volumes" printed on title-page which has been adapted by Hertzberg to contain additional information. As well printed in red at bottom of title page: "This was especially gotten up for the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition St. Louis 1904 to show the Art of Bookbinding in America by Ernst Hertsberg 110 Randolf St. Chicago. Limited Edition All fourteen volumes of this complete set are in very good or better condition in 3/4 red leather and marbled paper covered boards with five raised bands on the spine and with gilt text in three of the compartments and with gilt rules separating the leather from the marbled paper. The top edges of the text blocks are gilt. Each volumes is quarto of 11 5/8 by 8 1/2 inches. The spines are all uniformly darkened some chipping and wear to the leather at the heels of the spines and the leather is worn through on several volumes over the tips of the boards. The hinges and joints for all the volumes are tight and strong. The contents are in near perfect condition with few marks of foxing or tanning. The images are nearly all protected with tissue guards. One of only 1000 sets printed with this set identified as number 414 and subscribed for by Mrs. Mary E. Drummond as noted on the verso of the fly title page of volume III. The set includes the following novels: Han of Iceland; Bug-Jargal; Last Day of A Condemned; Claude Gueux; Notre- Dame Of Paris in two volumes; Les Miserables in five volumes; Laughing Man in two volumes; and Ninety-Three. Illustrated throughout with black and white engravings by various artists. This is an extremely large and heavy set weighing 48 pounds.
