Il est exceptionnellement enrichi d'une suite supplémentaire sur chine. . Cette nouvelle est inspirée de l'histoire d'une mystique et religieuse italienne Benedetta Carlini qui vécu au XVIIe siècle. Cette « chronique italienne » inachevée est accidentellement testamentaire : c'est la dernière oeuvre à laquelle Stendhal ait travaillé quand la mort est venue le faucher par surprise sur un trottoir parisien le 22 mars 1842. Exhumé par le grand stendhalien Henry Debraye en 1920 le texte fut établi d'après les différentes notes de travail et des deux manuscrits qui se trouvent à la Bibliothèque municipale de Grenoble car Stendhal en avait tenté une première rédaction en avril 1839 au sortir immédiat de L'Abbesse de Castro et de La Chartreuse de Parme. New York; 1950: New Directions. First Edition. Octavo. These two volumes are the translations by Louise Verese from the unfinished French noval: "Lucien Leuwen". They represent a complete narrative that shows his ability to show tender feelings though most critics see him as a tough-minded analyst. The Green Huntsman 388 pages and The Telegraph 415 pages. There are fine passages in the Stendhal manner upon the nature of love and the Verese translation captures the feeling of the original French manuscript. A near fine set bound in red cloth spine lettering in gilt over green pictorial endpapers in unclipped pictorial dust jackets. The telegraph has a wrinkle to jacket on rear panel and la small crease to lower corner of front panel. A very nice set. New Directions unknown

Involving audacious plagiarism these early works on music originally appeared in French in 1814 under the pseudonym Louis-Alexandre-Cesar Bombet.
