Deuxième roman de Stendhal après Armance, celui-ci entendait là tenter de dévoiler les coulisses de la révolution de 1830, avec comme trame de fond la structure sociale de la France de l'époque, les oppositions entre Paris et la province, entre noblesse et bourgeoisie, entre les jansénistes et les jésuites. Dans Le Rouge et le Noir, Julien Sorel - le protagoniste - fait l'objet d'une étude approfondie. Ambition, amour, passé, tout est analysé. Le lecteur suit avec un intérêt croissant les méandres de sa pensée, qui conditionnent ses actions. Mathilde de la Mole et Madame de Rênal ne sont pas en reste. Leur amour pour Julien, égal l'un à l'autre, sont mis en perspective et chacun est mis à nu sous la plume de Stendhal dans ce roman psychologique comptant parmi les dix plus grands romans de tous les temps (selon William Somerset Maugham). One of 175 copies quarto size 146 pp. Marie-Henri Beyle 1783-1842 is likely best remembered today for his novels "Le Rouge et le Noir" and "La Chartreuse de Parme" and is considered one of the earliest authors of realism. Stendhal saw much of the Europe of his day; as part of the Napoleonic army he participated in the 1812 invasion of Russia and the retreat therefrom; served as the French consul in parts of Italy and eventually moved to Paris being buried in Montmarte. <br/><br/>Stendhal's "Journals" provide a fascinating glimpse not only into some of the places to which he travelled but more importantly into his inner thoughts; he was one of the Allens' "esteemed authors" and they were excited at the chance to publish an excerpt of his "Journals" when approached with the idea by Professor Francis Carmody. <br/><br/>As stated in the Allen Press bibliography "this was our fourth edition to be produced entirely by hand with hand-crafted materials throughout. We were now convinced that this method was our proper métier - that the handpress is the most satisfactory instrument in a chimerical attempt at the craftsmanship standards set by Kelmscott Doves and Ashendene presses" p. 39. Dust wrapper of plain black Italian laid paper with gilt lettering on the spine. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Fine with clean boards perfectly straight corners totally without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean crisp as new. A lovely copy entirely untrimmed pages 181 x 140 mm with the original wrappers bound in to each volume including the spine panels. Elegantly bound by Edouard Pagnant of Paris 1852-1916 in green half-morocco over marbled boards spine with gilt titles and decorated columns marbled end papers. Internal contents clean and fresh quite rare and desirable with the original printed wrappers. Upper wrapper and titles with vignettes of Henry Monnier engraved by Porret. Volume one vignette shows Julien Sorel appearing to Madame de Renal near a confessional; volume two shows Mathilde de La Mole holding the head of Julien Sorel.<br/><br/>Stendhal's surprisingly modern bildungsroman about the rise and fall of the romantic Julian Sorel who attempts to climb the rungs of French society and surpass the expectations of his modest rural upbringing. The novel is not only an exploration of Julian's own psychological and spiritual struggles but also a satire of the clergy and French society in general. Starting at the beginning about three-quarters 75% of the pages have minor worming at the bottom margin affecting edges of text on several pages. Title page of first volume with previous owner's name written twice in pen "L. Langlois-Longueville." Preliminary and final blanksheets are toned as are both half-titles and title pages. Text is otherwise quite clean with only an occasional presence of slight foxing. A few pages are starting to loosen. Hardcover; bound in marbled paper-covered boards and brown leather spine; hinges are moderately rubbed and spine has slight creasing and wear as do the extremities of the boards. Text is in French.
