The spine has four raised bands. Stendhal was the pen name of Marie-Henri Beyle. A historical psychological novel it chronicles a young provincial man's attempts to rise socially beyond his modest upbringing. He employs a combination of talent and hard work deception and hypocrisy but in the end he allows his passions to betray him. Originally published as two volumes both are included in this work.
