Full contemporary glazed lavallière calf binding. Smooth spine decorated. Brown morocco title label. Upper joint split at head and tail with loss of leather. A few narrow cracks along the upper joint. Surface wear at bottom of upper board 2 small ones at bottom of lower board. Both upper corners discretely restored. Copy overall quite fresh printed on fine paper despite some scattered foxing. Fine and carefully produced edition reproducing the Costes edition of 1739 for the text and notes as well as the key to the Characters. The Discourse to the French Academy forms the final text. In the original French. Complete in two volumes. 'Caracteres' is a work of literary criticism and satirical essays. This was a popular work during it's time though it also brought much criticism from the likes of Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle and Thomas Corneille. Written by Jean de la Bruyere a French philosopher who was known for his satire. Edited by Damase Jouaust a French printer and publisher. With a preface by Louis Lacour a French librarian and historian. Bookplate to the front pastedowns 'Thomas Herbert Lewin'. Lewin was a soldier writer and an administrator in India. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Some light marks to the front board of Volume II. A little bumping to the extremities. Some very minor marks to the boards. Good-. <p>Jean de La Bruyere 1645 â€" 1696 was a French philosopher and moralist who was noted for his satire The plan of "Les Caracteres" is thoroughly original if that term may be accorded to a novel and skillful combination of elements exists in it The treatise of Theophrastus may have furnished the concept but it gave little more With the ethical generalizations and social Dutch paintings accompanying his original La Bruyere combined the peculiarities of the Montaigne Essais of the Pensees and Maximes of which Pascal and La Rochefoucauld are the masters respectively and lastly of that peculiar seventeenth century product the "portrait" or elaborate literary picture of the personal and mental characteristics of an individual The result was quite unlike anything that had been seen previously and it has not been exactly reproduced since although the essay of Addison and Steele resembles it very closely especially in the introduction of fancy portraits La Bruyere's privileged position at Chantilly provided him with a unique vantage point from which he could witness the hypocrisy and corruption of the court of Louis XIV As a Christian moralist he aimed at reforming people's manners and ways by publishing records of his observations of aristocratic foibles and follies which earned him many enemies at the court In the titles of his work and in its extreme desultoriness La Bruyere reminds the reader of Montaigne but he aimed too much at sententiousness to attempt even the apparent continuity of the great essayist The short paragraphs of which his chapters consist are made up of maxims proper of criticisms literary and ethical and above all of the celebrated sketches of individuals baptized with names taken from the plays and romances of the time These last are the greatest feature of the work and that which gave it its immediate if not its enduring popularity They are wonderfully piquant extraordinarily lifelike in a certain sense and must have given great pleasure or more frequently exquisite pain to the apparent subjects who in many cases were unmistakable and most recognizable</p> <p>This stated tenth edition volume is bound in full leather featuring raised bands and gilt tooling and lettering on the panels The work is adorned with an engraved portrait frontispiece titled "Tout Espirit orgueilleux qui s'aime Par mes lecons se void gueri; Et dans mon livre si cheri Apprend a se hair soy-mesme" The title page is printed in red and black The work is bound with "Discours Prononce Dans L'Academie Francoise" The book shows mild to moderate signs of age and wear with light rubbing/scraping to the boards as well as a section of material lacking from the spine cover The spine also shows some edgewear/cracking Text is clear and crisp through mild age toning The title page has been trimmed at the top with no obstruction to the text Endpapers show previous owner inscriptions and labels </p> 652 xliv pp. Estienn & Michallet unknown

Maler François Léopold Flameng 1856 -1923.Über den pariser Buchbinder Hardy ist leider wenig bekannt- Jean de La Bruyère 1645-1696 war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Der als Moralist zu den großen französischen Klassikern gerechnete Autor stammte aus einer bürgerlichen wohl erst seit kurzem in Paris ansässigen Familie und erhielt nach einem Jurastudium in Orléans 1665 die Zulassung als Anwalt am höchsten Pariser Gericht dem Parlement. 1671 beerbte er mit seinen drei jüngeren Geschwistern einen reichen Onkel und kaufte 1673 in Caen ein Amt in der Finanzverwaltung das ihn pro forma adelte ihm aber keine Präsenz vor Ort abverlangte. Er lebte vielmehr weiter als Rentier in Paris und dilettierte als Privatgelehrter.Als Randfigur im hochadeligen Milieu wurde er zu dessen scharfem Beobachter und bereicherte in der Folge die Theophrastschen „Charaktere“ um die Darstellung sozialer Typen der eigenen Zeit wobei er mit Vorliebe bestimmte adelige und pseudoadelige Verhaltensweisen aber auch allgemeine menschlich-allzumenschliche Schwächen Manien und Ticks aufs Korn nahm. 1688 ließ er ein Bändchen erscheinen mit dem Titel «Les Caractères de Théophraste traduits du grec avec les caractères ou les mœurs de ce siècle».Das Werk war dank seiner Thematik seiner Einteilung in kurze gut lesbare Abschnitte sowie seiner pointierten oft ironischen Formulierungen sofort ein Erfolg und La Bruyère erweiterte es von einer zur nächsten der neun Auflagen die rasch aufeinander folgten; die letzte kurz nach seinem Tod. The first three similar to each other appeared during 1688. The fourth edition is therefore considered the second first edition. It appeared simultaneously at the Parisian publisher Etienne Michallet who had indeed shared his privilege with Amaulry since the first editions. Title page in red and black. Half vellum 19th-century binding with corners. Spine with raised bands decorated with roulettes. Brown shagreen title label. Upper joint split at tail for 8 cm. Small split in vellum at lower joint at head. Rubbing. This fourth edition is the first to have been completed it indeed contains 764 remarks against 420 in the first and those that followed. The writing of the Caractères begins in 1670 but it is only after 17 years of work that La Bruyère decides to publish the Caractères he is however so unsure of success that he gives precedence to his translation of Theophrastus's Characters in the first editions and it will be necessary to wait for the fifth for the work of the Caractères to assert itself before that of Theophrastus and for La Bruyère to finally sign the edition with his name. The last endpaper has been pasted down over the privilege. 3 wormholes on the spine. La Bruyère's Characters was a dynamic work constantly evolving. While the first edition emphasized the translation of Theophrastus's Characters editions from the fourth in 1689 onward would include numerous additions; thus the fourth edition the first to have been completed contains 764 remarks compared to 420 in the first the sixth that we offer will count 997 compared to the original 420. The sixth edition 1691 grants for the first time a privileged place to the Characters having his translation of Theophrastus printed in smaller type and explicitly signing his work: in remark 14 of the chapter ""De quelques usages"" he replaces ""Geoffroy D"" with ""Geoffroy de la Bruyère"" the alleged high-born ancestor of the author.
