‎The Irish Guards in the Great War. Edited and Compiled from their Diaries and Papers. [With an Introduction by the Author]. NEAR FINE SET IN THE ORIGINAL BINDING‎

‎2 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece maps in red and black, and 9 maps (2 folding) in red and black, free endpapers mildly browned; original regimental red cloth, upper boards blocked with crest in gilt, gilt backs, gilt tops, a near fine set in the original binding. Vol I: The First Battalion; Vol. II: The Second Battalion and Appendices. The standard history of the regiment in the Great War, including ROH, and awards & decorations. Kipling undertook the history of the regiment in WWI following the death in action of his son John at the Battle of Loos whilst serving with the Second Battalion; a personal tragedy from which the author never fully recovered. After five and a half years of research ('done with agony and bloody sweat') the work was immediately recognised as both a military and a literary masterpiece. 'One could be assured that when Mr. Kipling turned his hand to a regimental history the result would be very different to the ordinary. The particular invention wherewith he has enriched this book is a sort of chorus - the comment of the private soldier upon the events narrated, which is witty and effective. Mr. Kipling has also brought to bear his magic upon that most matter-of-fact of records, the battalion war diary, and has made it live. Generally speaking he has composed a noble tribute to the great regiment in the ranks of which he lost his son' (Falls). Enser, p.66;Falls, p.117; Sutcliffe, p.14; White, p. 45.‎

When written in 1894'The Jungle Book' reflects Kipling's deep affinity with the world of childhood and the mysteries of the animal kingdom. Its appeal today is as strong as ever and the wonderfully atmospheric illustrations in this new edition give a fresh look to the immortal stories of Mowgli; from his adoption by the wolves and training in the stern law of the jungle by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther to the victory over the tiger Shere Khan. The magical evocation of the animal world is not confined to the Mowgli stories. The Jungle Book also contains several other charming talesincluding 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi'the story of a plucky little mongoose who takes on a pair of deadly cobrasand 'Toomai of the Elephants'in which a young mahout is uniquely privileged to witnessat dead of night in a forest clearingthe legendary dance of the elephants. The artist Gregory Alexander travelled widely in Indiahis research for this his first booksteeping himself in Indian art and village lifeand developing a style which captures the flavour of the stories and the darksecretive world of the jungle. Authentic in detail and hauntingly romantic in atmospherehis pictures are firmly in the tradition of Indian book illustration and form the ideal accompaniment to Kipling's most engaging and memorable book. Gregory Alexander studied at Canterbury College of Art and West Surrey College of Art and Designgraduating in 1981. Several prestigious awards led to his election as an Associate member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours at the age of 24; full membership followed in 1987.He now paints in watercolouroil and acrylic and his subjects reflect his love of travel. This edition of the stories is published in association with the National Trust. The Trust owns and administers Kipling's home Bateman'sat Burwash in East Sussex and the house is open to the public.
