A lightly used copy; jacket a little frayed to spine ends short tear to upper minor creasing. Shows well. The title refers to the period between the South African War and the Armistice in 1918. Comprised of forty-five poems and a series of epitaphs this is consided by Kipling scholars as some of his darkest work. Includes 'For All We Have and Are' The Irish Guards' The Spies' March' and 'My Boy Jack' a moving tribute to his fallen son John a commissioned officer killed in action at the Battle of Loos 1915. His death inspired his father to write a wartime history of the Irish Guards Regiment and led to Rudyard Kipling's association with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; there is still some debate over the exact location of John Kipling's resting place. It has the necessary "points" that make it a "first" namely "First Published in 1919" on the copyright pages and 32 pages of Methuen book ads in the rear the final page of which is dated February 1919. The title pages includes a vignette illustration of a sitting World War I soldier. Forty-six poems are included in this collection. The book is bound in red cloth with gilt spine lettering. The spine is toned a bit but the gilt lettering is bright and crisp. It also has top-edge gilt. The book has the embossment of a former owner on the front free endpaper. The binding is tight and secure and the text pages are clean. The rough cut page edges were less than brilliantly cut by the original owner. The book measures 5 by 7 1/2 inches and includes 159 pages plus the 32 pages of ads mentioned above. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6�" - 7�" tall. Methuen & Co.
