Composer's name stamp and "file copy" stamp on the front cover outer bifolium separating a bit at both ends of the fold light edgewear and toning a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Gerard F. Cobb is primarily remembered for his musical settings to Kipling's words this perhaps being his last such composition as he passed away in March of the year it was published. This song is unrecorded by OCLC and appears equally scarce in the trade; in fact the only references we can find to the piece online are are The Kipling Society citing a record of it in Rudyard Kipling A Bibliographical Catalogue by James McGregor Stewart and a 2005 recording released by ABC Records-Australia on an album titled When the Empire Calls. Sheet music: The Absent-Minded Beggar No. 1 in C

This charitable effort by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War was reportedly the first of its kind. Kipling wrote the lyrics specifically to be used in this fashion and is quoted as saying "It's catchpenny verse and I want it to catch just as many pennies as it can" going on to remark that it is not something he would ever care to reprint "so there is no need of copyrighting it in America. If anyone wants to sing it take care that the proceeds go to our men" Victoria and Albert Museum. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies. Enoch & Sons / The Daily Mail unknown

Sheet music: The Absent Minded Beggar No. 2 in D
New York: Boosey & Co 1899. Softcover. Fair. Later printing possibly the first American edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia with a single sheet insert making ten pages. Outer bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present inner bifolium nearly separated edgewear owner name on the front cover and toning and soiling to the exterior a complete but fair only copy. Plate imprint "E. 7 - 7." This song was originally published in London in 1899 by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War. The original front cover printed the statement "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war." This charitable effort was reportedly the first of its kind. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies; what is not certain is whether or not Boosey & Co. took care to contribute part of their proceeds from this American publication as nothing is printed indicating that they did. An interesting reprint that appears to be a bit more uncommon than the original. Boosey & Co unknown
