‎The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book.‎

‎London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books‎

‎The Jungle Books.‎

‎Garden City and New York: Doubleday & Company Inc 1948. The Book Club edition of Kipling's Jungle Books. Octavo two volumes original cloth. Illustrations by Albert Watson. Foreword by Nelson Doubleday. Near fine in very good dust jackets. Book design by Oscar Ogg. Author photograph by Elliot and Frey Ltd. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. We have more books available by this author!. 229 pp. "After an affair with a Mrs. Agnes Keith-Wessington in Simla the narrator Jack repudiates her and eventually becomes engaged to Miss Kitty Mannering. Yet Mrs. Wessington continually reappears in Jack's life begging him to reconsider insisting that it was all just a mistake. But Jack wants nothing to do with her and continues to spurn her. Eventually Mrs. Wessington dies much to Jack's relief. However some time thereafter he sees her old rickshaw and assumes that someone has bought it. Then to his astonishment the rickshaw and the men pulling it pass through a horse revealing themselves to be phantoms bearing the departed ghost of Mrs. Wessington. This leads Jack into increasingly erratic behavior which he tries to cover up by concocting increasingly elaborate lies to assuage Kitty's suspicions. Eventually a Dr. Heatherlegh takes him in supposing the visions to be the result of disease or madness. Despite their efforts Kitty and her family become increasingly suspicious and eventually call off the engagement. Jack loses hope and begins wandering the city aimlessly accompanied by the ghost of Mrs. Wessington. American Publishers Corporation hardcover books‎
