Tipped in is a signed letter from Kipling himself addressed to a soldier and avid collector of Kipling's works. The letter from Kipling notes that he finds the average autograph hunter an unmitigated nuisance but 'I am always glad to write to an ex-soldier'. He also discusses soldier correspondents that he has himself before speaking about cheap editions of his own work. Kipling states 'so long as people will buy six-shilling books I shall hold on before offering them cheaper ones but there will be a cheap edition one of these days'. The first edition of this work with 192 on the inside edge of page 192. Publisher's adverts to the rear are dated December 1887. In the publisher's original binding with illustrated boards. 'Plain Tales from the Hills' was Kipling's first collection of short stories. They were initially published in the 'Civil and Military Gazette' in British India between 1886 and 1887. "The remaining tales are more or less new." Kipling had worked as a journalist for the CMG—his first job—since 1882 when he was not quite 17. <br />The title refers by way of a pun on "Plain" as the reverse of "Hills" to the deceptively simple narrative style; and to the fact that many of the stories are set in the Hill Station of Simla—the "summer capital of the British Raj" during the hot weather.
