In full: "I am of course honoured to be on the Committee of the Emile Verhaeren's memorial but it seems to me that if he is to be adequately honoured by England it should be officially and for that purpose you must have the Poet Laureate Robert Bridges to deliver the oration and I think you would find Mr. Edmund Gosse would agree with this. I hope before long that we may have the pleasure of meeting you again at -- our common London home." Naulakha Waite Vermont 15 June 1896. Framed Letter. Not examined out of frame. Appears Fine. Humorous handwritten one-page letter SIGNED "Rudyard Kipling" on his Naulakha Waite Vermont stationery to William Livingston Alden. In full: "Many thanks for your kind little note. It's a rummy land this side but there's a heap of material that I've got out of it. however i shall be clearing out in the Fall to get the taste out of my mouth. You see the devil of it is that a reporter once found out from a hired Swede girl that I occasionally sat down to dinner in that kind of rig which the downtrodden subjects of an effete monarchy call evening dress. Since then I have been considered with suspicion. But you'll see me come along in time back to civilization with a bicycle and a fishing-rod." Attractively and professionally matted and framed with a photographic reproduction of Kipling to an overall size of 15-1/2" x 13." Alden was an American journalist humorist and writer of fiction. He had been Consul General in Rome 1885-89 and from 1892 until his death in 1908 he lived in London where he was a regular contributor to magazines. The letterhead is of interest as in 1895 the U. S. Postmaster General authorized a special post office since Kipling received more mail than the largest business in the area. Waite Vermont existed solely in the home of and was named for the Kiplings' neighbor Anna F. Waite who was appointed Postmistress. The Kiplings left Vermont not long after this letter was written never to return Waite Vermont ceased to exist the following year. Today philatelists prize the Waite postmark being the only post office ever created for an individual. Kipling wrote THE JUNGLE BOOK and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS in Vermont. It is said that Kipling's Naulakha is where skiing was introduced to Vermont and the site of the state's first tennis court. <br/><br/> unknown

Bateman's 19 August 1911. Letter. Folds from mailing. Near Fine. Superb handwritten unpublished two-page letter on both sides of a 9" x 7" sheet of paper folded in half so that the writing is not back to back. Written to John Fleming the husband of Kipling's sister Alice "Trix" about Trix's mental health following her mental breakdown after the deaths of their parents which occurred the previous year. In part: "We are just back from a trip abroad and I find the enclosed letter for Trix waiting for me here. It is some time since I have had news and I have not cared to trouble you because I knew that if there was any news to tell you would have written it but I should like to know how Trix is progressing. Mr Macdonald has written me that Trix would like to have the painted fire screen from the dining room at The Gables Kipling's parents' home. I sent the . entrée dishes . to be put with her other things & I sent at the same time an 'Outward Bound' edition which you said you thought she would like to have." SIGNED in full. In the same month this letter was written Kipling wrote "In the Same Boat" a short story about psychological healing which was published in both HARPER'S MAGAZINE and later in the collection of tales A DIVERSITY OF CREATURES. With a printed description from Maggs Bros. <br/><br/>This was part of a Kipling family archive that came down through Helen MacDonald a great niece of Rudyard Kipling's mother Alice MacDonald. Alice's three sisters were married to Edward Burne Jones Edward Poynter and Alfred Baldwin father of 20th century British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. unknown

New York: United States Book Company 1892. Scarce early printing of perhaps Kipling’s most popular poetry collection. Octavo original wrappers as issued. In near fine condition. Exceptionally rare. Written in vernacular dialect Kipling's The Barrack Room Ballads contains some of Kipling's most well-known work including the poems "Gunga Din" "Tommy" "Mandalay" and "Danny Deever" which established his early fame as a poet. The first poems were published in the Scots Observer in the first half of 1890 and collected in Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses in 1892. Kipling later returned to the theme in a group of poems collected in The Seven Seas under the same title. A third group of vernacular Army poems from the Boer War titled "Service Songs" and published in The Five Nations 1903 can be considered part of the Ballads as can a number of other uncollected pieces. This collection was so popular upon publication in 1892 it was pirated in a small number of unauthorized editions which were sold on the streets of London and quickly suppressed. Housed in a custom chemise case. Scarce. In the short span of four years English author Rudyard Kipling produced in addition to the Jungle Books a collection of short stories The Day's Work a novel Captains Courageous and a profusion of poetry including the volume The Seven Seas. The collection of Barrack-Room Ballads was issued in March 1892 first published individually for the most part in 1890 and containing his poems "Mandalay" and "Gunga Din". unknown
