First edition first issue of Kipling's classic collection of stories illustrated with 22 <span class="glossaryQtip qTip">plates </span>designed by Kipling himself. Octavo original black-and white-stamped pictorial red cloth. Inscribed by Bertram Rota the owner of the Bodley House bookstore in London "S.W. Jackson's copy of my boyhood's favorite book. This copy survived fire and water when so many of its fellows were destroyed by Nazi barbarism at Bodley House in October 1940. After being stored nearby and escaping more bombs it returned to the resurrected bookshop and now leaves Bodley House to find sanctuary in friendly hands in a luckier land. With all good wishes Bertram Rota June 6th 1941." Bertram Rota began selling books in 1923 and was essentially the first bookseller to specialize in modern first editions. In 1923 Rota moved operations to the former location of the Bodley Head publishing house on Vigo Street in London where in spite of sustaining a direct hit during a Nazi blitzkrieg the bookshop remained for twenty-eight years. In near fine condition with light rubbing. Exceptional with fascinating provenance. A prolific author known for his varied works from "The Jungle Book" to "Captains Courageous" in the "Just So Stories" Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 creates delightful stories of animals and how they got their distinguishing characteristics such as "How the Leopard Got His Spots" and "How the Camel Got His Hump". The stories are illustrated by Kipling himself and are a timeless collection of children's fables. Kipling began to write these stories during a stay in America for the amusement of his daughter Josephine; sadly she died at a young age of pneumonia. The stories remain popular having been adapted numerous times as well as being published as separate works. On the front paste-down is the lovely custom designed bookplate of Agnes Jekyll possibly the Agnes Jekyll who lived 1861-1937 an artist and philanthropist who was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1918. The bookplate is signed but is difficult to read it could be "C.B. Sherson 1890". ___DESCRIPTION: Full red cloth illustrations of animals in white and black on the front and rear boards white lettering on the front board and spine twenty-two full-page black-and-white illustrations by Rudyard Kipling throughout; octavo size 9.5" by 7" pagination: i-vi 1 2-249 250-251. Tasteful prior owner bookplate on the front paste-down. Housed in a custom clamshell box with quarter maroon leather and brown cloth boards vertical gilt rules along the leather the spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering lined with white cloth. ___CONDITION: Very good the boards mostly clean with a few light spots of soil a strong square text block the text pages clean and bright with only a few scattered spots of foxing and the sole prior owner marking we see the bookplate referred to above; the corners gently bumped but not rubbed the head and tail of the spine bumped with a few very small tears to the cloth the spine is somewhat sunned but the white lettering and decorations still clearly visible the front hinge is starting but the front board still firmly attached rear hinge is solid a few leaves throughout with light foxing the endpapers and flyleaves with the foxing a bit more pronounced and slightly cracked gutters at pages 64-65 and 80-81.
