The first volume of each of the remaining five hundred and twenty-five numbered sets is signed by the author." This is set number 114. Signed by Rudyard Kipling in black ink. Volume One includes a facsimile page opposite the title page of Rudyard Kipling's handwriting within the manuscript of "The Thousandth Man" limited to the copies of this edition of poems. Separated by bounded tissue. Light tan cloth boards with light brown title boxes along spines. Gold-embossed design of an elephant holding a flower with a swastika near its head on all three volume front covers. Many page leafs remain uncut. Shelfwear: light scuffing along cover edges heavy spine tanning to all volumes heavy smudge and scuff marks to front and back covers light fading to covers. Light foxing to page edges inside front and back covers and front and back free endpapers. Volume One is missing a small piece from the top of the spine. Name of 'Gilkison' a New Zealand author on free front end-paper. Top edge gilt other edges tanned end-papers lightly foxed text block generally clean but a few grubby marks mostly in margins. Monochrome frontispiece and 19 drawings by H.R. Millar collated all present one with a creased corner. Inter-page adhesion affects two words on p. 304. The 10pp. booklist at rear is dated 10.10.06. Publisher's green cloth with boat illustration in blind to front board lettered in gilt and top edge gilt. Near fine with clean and bright boards light wear to spine ends joints and corners and small marks to pp. 46-47 lines 15-21 on both pages slightly affected. Overall an excellent copy. In Puck of Pook's Hill two children playing in the English countryside are approached by the magical fairy Puck from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Over the course of the summer Puck introduces them to notable events and characters from British history told through ten connected short stories. Interspersed between the stories are poems by Kipling some of which were later selected by T.S. Eliot for inclusion in A Choice of Kipling's Verse 1941. Notably this first American edition includes illustrations by the legendary book illustrator Arthur Rackham whereas the first UK edition was illustrated by Harold R. Millar. First Edition. Set in multiple periods of English history Kipling's Puck stories are each narrated to two children living near Burwash in the High Weald of Sussex in the area of Kipling's own house Bateman's by people magically plucked out of history by the elf Puck or told by Puck himself. Puck who refers to himself as "the oldest Old Thing in England" is better known as a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. The genres of the stories range from authentic historical novella A Centurion of the Thirtieth On the Great Wall to children's fantasy Dymchurch Flit.
