In fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise case. First published in 1903 Kipling's The Five Nations included a number of new poems as well as several that had been previously published notably Recessional of 1897. In 1903 the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa i.e. Cape Colony and 'the islands of the sea' i.e. the British Isles" - all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case by recent settlers. These two volumes discuss the experiences of the Irish guards from 1914 to 1918. The point of view is the battalions with the assistance of Regimental diaries private letters and documents. In his beautiful way Kipling transports the reader back to that sunny summer of 1914 when the rampant optimism gave way to the horror of the trenches. Kipling lost his son at Loos his remains not identified until 1992. It is his ability to write with power that makes this an eminently readable copy even now in the 21st century. Volume II also contains on pages 217-284 an index appendix A; Officers who were killed; B. NCO's who were killed and C. the award from the Victoria Cross to the many distinguished service medals. A fine set beautifully bound in a modern 3/4 black leather over black cloth raised bands compartments lettered and decorated in gilt top edges gilt endpapers renewed housed within black cloth slipcase. A good copy with wear moderate wear and rubbing to the spine spine ends frayed corners worn lean to spine; internally ownership blindstamp to first blank spine cracked at pages 128/129. Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Octavo two volumes bound in full morocco by Atelier with gilt titles and tooling to the spines in six compartments within raised bands triple gilt ruling and fleuron cornerpieces to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt illustrated with engravings by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny including tissue-guarded frontispiece to Volume I. With the original cloth spines front and rear panels bound in at the rear of each volume. In fine condition. An exceptional set of these classic children's books. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937.
