‎The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book.‎

‎London: Macmillan 1894-95. First edition second printings of both volumes of The Jungle Book finely bound in full morocco. Octavo two volumes bound in full morocco by Atelier with gilt titles and tooling to the spines in six compartments within raised bands triple gilt ruling and fleuron cornerpieces to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt illustrated with engravings by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny including tissue-guarded frontispiece to Volume I. With the original cloth spines front and rear panels bound in at the rear of each volume. In fine condition. An exceptional set of these classic children's books. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books‎

‎Rudyard Kipling Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Morgan Crofton.‎

‎1898. Single page folded into quarters on custom writing paper from The Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town South Africa with "The Vineyard Newlands ____ 189_" printed at the header. "Ap. 12 1898. Dear Morgan Crofton: We are in the last agonies of packing today but I hope to have the honour of calling on the general before 12: so Tomorrow. I am most sorry to have missed him this visit. Very sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling." Written to British Army officer Sir Morgan George Crofton during Kipling's first winter holiday in South Africa during which he was welcomed by a number of Cape Colony's leading politicians including the letter's recipient. Rudyard Kipling made his first holiday visit to Cape Town South Africa in early 1898 accompanied by his wife and two young children. Kipling had recently been awarded the title Poet of the Empire of Great Britain and was taking an increasingly political stance in his poetry as illustrated in his most recent poem "Recessional" composed for the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. He was warmly received in South Africa by some of the most influential politicians of the time whom he developed long-lasting friendships with and led to his interest in the British cause in the Boer War. unknown books‎

Dustjacket is unclipped with tears to the extremities; Very Good only.

The book consists of four stories that read as letters home from soldiers from India and the North-West Frontier which take place in 1915 and 1916. "A Retired Gentleman" and "The Fumes of the Heart" are both fictionalized letters written from the perspective of wounded Indian soldiers a Rajput and a Sikh to their families. The second is cast as a dictated letter from a Sikh soldier to his brother and has dramatic asides and digressions from the injured soldier punctuating the text. As for the remaining two stories "The Private Account" is presented as a scene showing an Afghan family reading and responding to a letter from their son on the Western Front and the final story "A Trooper of Horse" takes the form of a letter from an unwounded Muslim soldier in France to his mother. doubleday unknown books‎
